It seems that faulty maintenance might be cause of panels ripping from US aircraft. I wonder if this work was performed in Alabama? Wonder what will happen when all those A350's show up with a complete composite pressure vessel? It will be interesting to see the complete story on this.

I do not think my links are working correctly. Here is another source. If someone else would like to contribute a link it would be appreciated.

This is something that has been going on since at least 1991. There are pre and post mod panels on the aircraft. The pre mods are more likely to crack at the attach clips than the post mods. Apparently some of the clips cracked and the panel departed the wing. I heard that some people were looking only to see if the panel was pre or post mod and I also heard there was some discussion on which type of fasteners are required. Other than that I don't know if it could be called "faulty maintenance." If they were looking for pre or post mod panels, then I'd say no. If they were supposed to be looking for cracks or type of fasteners then the answer would be a probable yes. It would depend upon how clearly the inspection criteria was written.

Thank you for a working link. I am surprised this did not draw more attention than it has.

Thanks for the well written explanation BeenThere. Sounds like something that might be near imposible to detect. The only thing you see exposed on the wing is rivet heads. I assume the attach clips are something you would not see by just looking at the panel. That makes since. Thanks again for the explanation.

I think all of the airlines are going to get the FAA version of an anal probe very soon regarding MTC procedures.

Going to have to disagree with there Piney as doing so would expose the fact that the US aviation fleet is one of the oldest on the planet. Go to Vietnam or the backwoods of China and you'll find a far more modern and advanced aviation fleet: and workers cutting grass along the runway with machetes because mowers are not to be found.

Cheap tickets sell to the voters back home so Capital Hill is well and truly perpetuating the status quo.

90% of Boeing's order backlog is going overseas. United has no new aircraft on order. Northwest flies Dc-9's that won't be retired until close to 50 years of service. Cracked fuselages, chafing wiring bundles, pieces falling off inflight.

My brother just bought a Portland - New York round trip for $202. Enjoy.
