Look up, there I am!
I just listed someone to go roundtrip from SWF (New York) to SAN. That ticket cost $135.

I got a one-way buddy pass from ISP (new York) to SAN for $80.

I just looked at booking a roundtrip from LAS to SAN. That costs $65.

What gives???? why is the LAS-SAN so high? Anyone offer any insight? We can purchase a real seat for about the same I am sure.

What are the routings and whose metal for the individual legs? I suspect your answer lies there.

BUDDY PASSES are ZONE BASED... and METAL sensitive...
log onto thehub.usairways.com and go to GUEST PASSES.. going from ISP to SAN is ZONE 1-6 $40.00 each way PLUS the TAXES...HOWEVER if you switch from US to HP metal it breaks the fare $40.00 NY to AZ and then $25.00 PHX to SAN so that fare is $65.00 each way PLUS TAXES...not sure when this will change probably when we go to one certificate.

$135 from SWF- SAN sounds about right if that amount includes taxes, no? 80.00 RT Zone 1-6 plus ~27.00 in taxes each way? Sometimes when I price buddy passes, (especially to Mexico!), the taxes add up to more than the Zonal fare itself!!

Keep in mind if you are changing from EAST to WEST metal that breaks the FARE..... see my previous REPLY

Right, but SWF- SAN is possible on all east metal, and, with the taxes, I would think that $135 could be accurate for the buddy pass. Just a guess....

Is there still an extra charge for flying on both US and HP or has that gone away now that both are on the same res system?

Shouldn't be now...east coast to west coast with one connection, should be $109.60 roundtrip, including tax.

Hey thanks for the info  My gripe is why on earth is the shortest route (LAS-SAN) one most likely west metal (it no longer shows) the "potentially" most expensive If you are talking miles)? It is the shortest distance.

The ISP to SAN is this:

ISP-PHL - Express
PHL-PHX - East
PHX-SAN - East

3 legs, 3 A/C, mixed metal and yet cheaper, in the long run

The new pass pricing system really screws people on the shorter itineraries. Travel within a zone is priced at $25/segment, so a roundtrip including taxes could easily be $65. I've seen this a lot booking PHX-LAS. I'd recommend checking sale fares in these short haul markets, especially if served by a real LCC, as it's very likely you can find positive space for the same or even less.

Hope this helps.

A shorter mixed-metal trip could be more expensive than a longer single-metal trip.

Single-metal is priced based on originating zone to destination zone plus taxes/pfc's.

Mixed metal is priced based on origination zone to change of metal zone plus change of metal zone to destination zone plus taxes/pfc's.

Even worse would be a double change of metal, which could happen.

Then you've got the different pfc's that various airports charge. That could change the cost $10 just by having different connecting points.
