What's new

China Award Thread-Merged Topics--

When it was announced it would be Beijing instead of the original choice of Shanghi I was dissapointed in part because the latter has a fairly new very modern and beautiful Airport, where Beijing left something to be desired. But now it seems a very impressive new Terminal is being built for Beijing opening in 2008, take a look !

we need to secure gates in phl or else we have to surrender the award. hopefuly this will motivate the phl airport offcialls to keep delta at the e- gates.

Did I miss something or are only DL and UA constrained from selling their route authorities for 5 years?
I read it as applying to all these awards, and probably all future awards:

"We tentatively propose to amend Delta’s certificate for its Atlanta-Shanghai service to impose
the five-year no sale/no transfer condition. Since United holds certificate authority to provide
San Francisco-Guangzhou combination services, we propose to impose this condition on
United’s seven frequencies for its San Francisco-Guangzhou service. The no sale/no transfer
condition would apply to US Airways’, American’s, and Continental’s new awards. Since
Northwest holds certificate authority to provide Detroit-Shanghai combination services, the
proposed limitation would only be applied to the seven frequencies tentatively allocated in this
proceeding for Northwest’s proposed service."

The flights are in the morning and not during the peak transatlantic operation, so I don't know if gates are an issue as they can use a gate for Beijing that is usually a transatlantic gate because the Beijing flight would be before the transatlantic flight arrives or departs.

Both US' initial application and final filing to the DOT clearly indicate that they intend to use a 269-seat A340-300; I'm not sure why it doesn't state that in the press release.

I don't know if the AC A345s are still available or if they have been leased to TAM as planned, other than that TAM is launching GRU-FRA this November with 267-seat A345s.

Further to BoeingBoy's post above, the DOT Order clearly states that the route must be operated for five years before it can be sold. See the following text:

"We have reviewed our policy in the context of this proceeding and tentatively find that the public interest calls for modifying the duration for which a carrier must operate newly-awarded U.S.-China routes or frequencies before that carrier may be permitted to sell or transfer the route/frequencies in question. We tentatively find that a five-year duration would more accurately demonstrate an initial commitment by the selected carrier to serve the market and would better illustrate an ability to successfully continue such service."

This means that US Airways can't sell its newly (albeit tentatively) awarded China route authority for 6.5 years, or until March 25, 2014, should it desire to do so, unless it is part of a full-scale merger or asset sale. Does anyone else think this new requirement was spurred by rumors of US Airways being sold off in parts?

It will be nice to finally see an American carrier flying the 4-hole A340. The A340-300 should have no problem making the PHL-PEK run, which is almost 6000nm i believe. Congrats on the award.

I assume we'd need two aircraft for this route, wouldn't we? If we were to get the four planes from AC, perhaps we could pick up Tokyo or Seoul, but we'd need an operational spare, so we would have to pick up an additional 340 somewhere.

Now that China is in US' future, here are some handy Chinese proverbs:

Virginity like bubble, one prick, all gone.

Man who run in front of car get tired.

Man who run behind car get exhausted.

Man with hand in pocket feel cocky all day.

Foolish man give wife grand piano, wise man give wife upright organ.

Man who walk through airport turnstile sideways going to Bangkok.

Man with one chopstick go hungry.

Man who scratch ass should not bite fingernails.

Man who eat many prunes get good run for money.

Baseball is wrong: man with four balls cannot walk.

Panties not best thing on earth but next to best thing on earth.

War does not determine who is right, war determine who is left.

Wife who put husband in doghouse soon find him in cat house.

Man who fight with wife all day get no piece at night.

It take many nails to build crib, but one screw to fill it.

Man who drive like hell, bound to get there.

Man who stand on toilet is high on pot.

Man who live in glass house should change clothes in basement.

Man who fish in other man's well often catch crabs.

Man who fart in church sit in own pew.

Crowded elevator smell different to midget.

Lady who stand on head is said to have crack up

Lady who rise bicycle is said to have peddled ass around town.

Perhaps these and other pearls of wisdom can be placed in US Airways branded "fortune" cookies?

Well Piney you very well know that at US Airways you better have a sense of humor. As big a fan and supporter of US as you are, I wish Tempe could give you the kind of airline that you're happy and proud to fly; as we were to work for. Hope is always good.
