Delta, United get first crack at new China routes
Delta received approval this morning from the Department of Transportation to begin nonstop service between Atlanta and Shanghai. The route is one of six new daily round-trip routes granted today by the U.S. DOT. The route awarded to Delta was eligible to start as early as Aug. 1, though the DOT will give the Atlanta-based carrier until March 2008 to launch the route to China. It will be the carrier's first route to the country. Routes to China are tightly regulated by bi-lateral aviation agreements between the USA and China. A recently approved aviation agreement between the nations opened up the equivalent of six new daily routes to U.S. carriers.

All six of the USA's so-called legacy carriers received one of the new routes awarded for flights to China. The rights to operate the latest batch of flights are staggered to begin between now and 2009. Following Delta, United Airlines has been granted the authority to begin daily nonstop service between its San Francisco hub and Guangzhou, China. United will be permitted to begin flying that route in March 2008. The other four Chinese routes were awarded to: US Airways for daily service between Philadelphia and Beijing; Continental for daily nonstop service between Newark, N.J., and Beijing; American for daily nonstop service Chicago O'Hare and Beijing; and Northwest for daily nonstop service between Detroit and Shanghai.

Well the company better start the planning now. We all know what Tempe puts as a timeline and what really IS spans a years difference.

I call is TST...Tempe Standard Time

... and its comforting to think that the airline will be looking for the most "cost neutral" A340's out there... err um "inexpensive". Lets hope that Tempe configures the A330s and A340s in the same way -- that way if there is a spare A340 sittin around and one of our A330s break (heaven forbid!!) its a simple few keystroke entry and done (at least in SLO).

I hear Air France has an A340 for sale, real cheap too!

I bet the Chinese just can't wait!

Tempe is probably already seeing if they can fit 300 cups of Ramen noodles in a single galley.

Dear Uncle Doug:
How excited we are for the new route to Beijing. I have two requests as we begin our planning.
1) Can we please have real bunks. A private crew rest area? While napping on the floor of the 330 yesterday I had my hand run over by the beverage cart. The week before while in my "rest seat" my shoulder was knocked out of joint by a passenger "of size" running to the restroom, the passenger behind me kept kicking my seat and left her window shade open. Please, oh please?
2) Please don't screw this up. Can we have real professionals plan the service on this flight. The Far East is very much into custom. Let's not embarrass ourselves my biting off more that we cashew.
Thanks

"Well, bust my britches SusieQ!' guess I'll be eating Crow tonite..........didn't think US had a chance in hell in landing these routes. Anything can happen in the meantime but this is a Totally Unexpected surprise. How the hell Tempe pulled off this Coupe is amazing when they can't seem to even integrate two mid size airlines. To coin a phrase "they pulled this one out of the hat' but in all reality I would tend to believe they pulled THIS One out of their Arsce! Utterly speechless on this announcement.........

Envoy is going back up to 42.

Wouldn't it be worth it to put in the lower area crew rest for this route? Has this ben discussed?
