Continental soars over Northwest to become No. 4 airline in U.S.

Continental Airlines Inc. has passed bankrupt Northwest Airlines Corp. to become the fourth-largest U.S. carrier, the first change in the top 5 rankings since 2001. Southwest Airlines Co., the largest low-fare carrier, also may be close to tying Northwest for the No. 5 spot by year's end. Continental's expansion comes as Northwest and others cut capacity to boost fares. The rankings are based on carriers' reports on the number of miles flown by paying passengers.

The nwa spin machine must be working double overtime. I read on another board the news that nwa is trying to increase capacity. Spinning in counter rotating directions. No wonder they're not going anywhere but down in the rankings. At this rate it won't take SWA till the end of the year to pass nwa. They'll have the number 5 slot sewed up before Thanksgiving.

 What a surprise. Cut flights in half @ drop your fares to get full airplanes. Get rid of maintenance. Still can't make money. What a business plan? But with the buttload of shares in C.O. that al checkbook and gary the pothead own, bought off the backs of former employees maybe this was their plan all along?

Capacity down about 10% and RASM up about 15%. Sorry to let those pesky facts get in the way of a good rant.

Had hell getting back to DTW today. You know it is bad when a non-revver is happy to see a flight load at 98%. These 100, 103 and 106% flight loads make it tough. It took me three legs again to get back. I know the full flight are great for the company but what about all the passengers that are refused boarding when they are standing there with a confirmed ticket? I understand that we are only talking about a few people per flight but when you are hearing it at every other gate it has to soon have a negative impact.

can't be as bad as you make it sound. evidently they're still boarding non-revs if you made it back to SCAB row!

They're always booked 10-20% over incase of no shows. If you non rev alot or work as a gate agent you would know this. If NW could, they would sell the seats in the lav and install seatbelts there.

I noticed in some markets NW is $200 cheaper with confirmed and plane isn't full. Wow.

did thunderstorms interupt your flts? I know at my city that UAL dropped a 757 DEN-EWR, NWA dropped a DC-9-30 and an A-320 not sure where they were headed to. Co dropped an XRJ--ERJ-145 long range.
May be someone can shed light as to where the NWA DC-9 and A320 were headed to.

Robbed--

EWR and some other airports were getting hammered with ground stops the other day. Without looking it up, my guess is that's where they were heading.....

yes I was going to say may be even PHL and LGA as well due to ground stops
