USFlyer said:Well, as a US to NW convert, I would love if NW could pick-up US's BOS, LGA, PHL and DCA assets. I know NW's business model is to "serve the heartland", but the NE can be quite profitable if done right.

WorldTraveler said:You are kidding, aren't you? So, far NW has defined its own turf as including the entire states of WI, MN, MI and pretty substantial portions of other midwest states. And they have gone to pick fights with other carriers - just smaller ones.
I'm not kidding. But I did say NW does protect it's turf. They'll fight off any airlines, even smaller airlines (LCC). That's not picking a fight, it's defending one's turf. I also said that NW will take an opportunity if they have a winning chance. So, what was I kidding about?

WorldTraveler said:NW has got to be looking at where the industry will go. I can't honestly believe that they are going to be content to be in a partnership where DL is the dominant airline on the east coast and across the Atlantic. I wouldn't be at all surprised if NW decides to take a chunk of US' assets and in so doing may pull out of partnerships w/ at least DL and maybe CO. On the other hand, they may move in such a way as to finally acquire CO. Either way, I don't think NW's participation in Skyteam is for the long term. Keep in mind, they didn't really join voluntarily; they were dragged into it because Air France bought NW's longtime partner. Given some time and a few opportunities, NW will come up w/ a new solution where they are the dominant carrier.
NW doesn't play second fiddle to anyone.

I think NWA realizes one of the strengths of their route network is that it insulates them fairly well from low-cost competition. Why go head-to-head with LCCs on the East Coast when (as I mentioned earlier) they can provide service there via "proxy."
As for NWA's SkyTeam membership, I believe they are in it for the long term. Richard Anderson said over and over again how important entering a global alliance is to NWA's strategy. They now have partners in nearly every important aviation market in the world.
I agree that NW was not happy with DL's recent fare action, but I do not think that displeasure will lead them to break-up their alliance. The old pricing strategies should have been thrown out long ago; Delta just had the guts to start the process.
