Delta Converts 777s to LRs and orders 73Gs

See below:

Delta/Boeing Agree to Revise Orders

Well Boeing seems happy to work with Delta.

Discuss...

Interesting article. Especially the part about Delta already realizing 400 million in fleet savings...with 50 million more to go. Looks like their fleet plan is right on course, despite what several on this board have written.

Couple that with all of the route changes that have already taken place, or at least announced. To summarize:

*Revenues from Int'l operations increasing from 20% total revenue in '05 to 35% by the end of '06 (will be 40% in '08)

*Trans-atlantic destinations up from 23 in '05 to 36 by summer of '06.

*New routes already started or about to start:
ATL-Seoul
ATL-Dubai
ATL-Prague
JFK-Pisa
JFK-Bucharest
JFK-Shannon
JFK-London
JFK-Sao Paulo

There are many others, but my fingers are getting tired....

For USA320Pilot and others who have posted about Delta being a "dying entity", this is great news! It's starting to look like you won't have to complete your hostile merger with an airline that you've characterized as being "in serious trouble".

Events that will take place between now and the end of this year will completely bury Parker's plan. Perhaps ralphcramden can get his people on it and break the story(ies) before they occur!

Abe

Standby for some more exciting fleet news in the coming weeks and months. It will be huge, and the new aircraft won't have the letters B U S in their name.

Nothing is over until the Fat Lady sings!!!

Protective..aren't we???

Just wait and see already.

You people are going to give yourself ulsers!!

Let me see if I understand this. Boeing is a major creditor and Delta places an order to change/add aircraft.

This will blow up the Usairways takeover bid.

Man this abe guy is just brilliant

Don't forget about the other creditors. They might not look so kindly on one creditor getting money while they are still told they will be taken care of in a stand alone plan.

No, you apparently don't understand. I didn't say anything in my post about Boeing being a creditor. I didn't even mention Boeing.

If you'll read it again I said that "Events that will take place between now and the end of this year will completely bury Parker's plan."

Then, in a different paragraph, I stated that that there would be other orders forthcoming from Delta. Not necessarily by the end of the year, but over the next several months.

And not necessarily from Boeing, but just not from Airbus.

Got it??

...this was a long overdue move. This somewhat fixes the fleet issue I referred to in another thread Abe that NW doesn't have. As DL moved the 732's to DLExpress and then just let them get old and tired they forgot to replace them. Instead they threw every dime and nickel at RJ's to the point of buying about a hundred too many. The D9's at NW may be old and use a lot of fuel, but they're owned and they fill an important gap in the fleet...the 100 seater. DL has a HUGE gap between 70 (CR7) and 140 seats (M80). That problem has been a big contributor to DL's passenger mix (local vs connecting). If a market had sufficient first class demand, it got an M80 even if it only needed 90-110 seats. The result was typically a lot of low yield Florida connecting pax which subsequently dragged down the benefit the first class pax were bringing. Conversely, if there wasn't much first demand but more than 50 people wanted to go somewhere you got two RJ's on top of each other. This was a huge problem in CVG for a long time. By filling that gap (with 73G's) they're going to be able to more appropriately match capacity to demand.

OK, how is this supposed to be good news for DL? I guess it's not bad, but it sure doesn't sound like they're about to conquer the world. Converting the 777s from ERs to LRs is a smart move, but hardly earthshattering. These are not new orders and if DL wants to compete with AA and UA for the international biz traveller, they need more big planes.

As for the 73Gs, it is certainly wise to take smaller narrowobodies than 738 since DL will be shrinking its domestic operations. But the agreements also effectively cancel all of their future 738 deliveries by selling the planes on delivery. I would call that major shrinkage.

Your post sums it up perfectly, flyhigh. Especially about the glut of RJ's. But those are being taken care of also as they find new homes in the desert.

That gap that you mention has definitely been a problem for Delta. This order (or conversion) helps, but there will still be a gap (the -700 holds around 125, I think).

At some point they need a true 100 seater....I'll bet it happens sooner rather than later.

So then abe you admit to being off topic?

Delta Converts 777s to LRs and orders 73Gs

Are 777 and 73Gs not BOEING?

Is BOEING a major creditor of Delta?

Once again your just BRILLIANT abe just Brilliant

...the 73G in a Delta config was planned with ~118 seats if I remember correctly. It's been a while since I last saw the camparisons. The 736 wasn't an option. The 318 & 319 were being looked at with the 319 being the preferred option. The 190 was the Embraer option.

12/112 = 124 seats in the 737-732s 🙂

As for the 100 seater, it's interesting that they might come from someplace we never expected!

If not Boeing or Airbus, that only leaves the RJ builders..
E-170's or E190's perhaps? Who will be flying them? If it will be Comair, this won't help anyone at Mainline move up.

The EMB190 is the 100 seat aircraft. It is scope protected and would be flown by DL pilots. DL connection flying is limited to 76 seats.

can someone just confirm the actual number of aircraft that will physically enter the DL fleet. All of the 738s will be sold to someone else save 2 in 2010. They will take 2, then 3 777's in 2008/2009 and 7 then 3 73G's in 2008/2009.

2008 = 2 777 & 7 73G
2009 = 3 777 & 3 73G
2010 = 2 738

is this correct??
