Effective 9/10/07, Delta is downgrading SLC - CMH from 1x MD-90 to 1x CRJ-900.

Are the loads that poor for SLC - CMH? Where is this MD-90 going to be flying now?

Hey, CO! I *think* DAL is reducing the MD-80/90 fleet, right? Since they are old and inefficient in fuel burn, I heard they were being retired. I could be wrong on this -- anyone from DAL know differently? Also, I cannot imagine that the load factor on CMH-SLC could be too terribly high. CMH has some of the lowest fares in America, too -- they have the recent start up Skybus, and Southwest has a strong presence there. Years ago, America West attempted a hub operation there, but it was quickly scrapped. Bottom line is this -- I don't think CMH has a lot going for it, and DAL is either retiring the Mad Dog fleet or using the aircraft on a better route. I am sure CMH-CVG is the way to go, and from there, you can connect to the entire DAL network (pretty much, anyway).

Hey Coffee!

On a side note - did you get my PM? Any other questions?

Ok, to respond:

1. Delta is actually looking to acquire more MD-90 on the second-hand market from Asia. Right now, Delta has a shortage of narrow-body 150 seaters such as the MD-88, MD-90 and 737-800. I am thinking they are reintroducing the a/c someplace else. The question is, most, if not all MD-90 a/c IIRC are now SLC based a/c. So, does this mean increased freq. on a route from SLC? Or is their just a deluge of a/c going in for heavy mx?

2. Although the L/F on SLC - CMH might not be too strong, one would think that with DL's connections through SLC, the airline can fill 136 Y seats and 16 J seats per day. However, the CRJ-900 IIRC is flow on a 6/64 config, so this is a downgrade of over 50% of seat capacity.

3. SX doesn't fly to SLC - or anywhere in UT. However, I'm surprised Oakland isn't branded as San Francisco/ Oakland / San Jose/ Salt Lake City / Portland / Reno / Maui International Airport. Moreover, although WN flies CMH extensively, this does not mean that DL can't support a single flight.

4. Although DL does run a hub from CVG, I would hate to see what a connection from CMH would cost.
Also, remember CVG, per seat mile, is one of the most expensive airports in the country to fly from in ticket fares.

5. With DL attempting to expand its SLC, JFK and LAX ops, you would expect to see them try to retain current capacity, not cut it.

6. Don't expect Delta to park those loud, thirsty Mad Dogs so soon! Although they have some 73G, 8 orders on the books, it's not enough to replace their big fleet of 88s and 90s.

7. BIG NEWS FROM AA shows that CMH demand is high!
American is adding a second daily Columbus - Miami flight. Currently, AA flies MIA - CMH 1x daily on a 37 seat ERJ-135. This will be upgrades to 2x 44 seat ERJ - 140XR a/c. This means 88 daily seats to Miami. The difference is, Miami competes with FLL and PBI where as SLC competes with your car, motorcycle or light truck. Moreover, DL XXX - SLC - XXX connections make SLC, in theory, a higher volume destination than MIA for AA (despite Latin American connections, however I would not imagine demand for Columbus - Latin America is too strong, and even if it is DFW is a more effective AA connection pt. for CMH pax.

Ahhh... that must be the Columbus bird.

The MD-90 is the only Mad Dog/ DC-9 beside that I have not flown.

Good luck on Friday!!!! Keep me posted. You will go to EWR for Reserve for 1 - 2 yrs.

They are looking for MD-90s, not MD-88s.
