Delta (and UA) would probably love nothing more than for AA to become entangled in a merger with US. Sometimes competitors root for the competition to make foolish mistakes and this would be one of those times.

I really doubt that DL favors a merger, but realizes it is going to happen, and they might as well pretend they were for it all the time.

Besides it could be a mess, with everyone clamoring for more money.

Delta will be waiting for the routes that will have to be divested when the merger is presented to the feds. Delta has deep pockets and Richard Anderson wants to keep expanding to keep delta at the top of the heap. They have many new aircraft on order and are bent on keeping the pressure on the rest of the carriers.

The synergies are the same. Only an AA/US combo can compete effectively with UA and DL. You may be in denial but most airline industry analysts agree.

Of course Delta supports a US/AA combination, because it will reduce the supply of seats in the market, after the combined networks are rationalized (I.e. the redundancies eliminated). This shrinkage happened with DL/NW and UA/CO, and it will happen with your merger, too.

The reduction in the overall supply of seats is what caused yields to rise recently. A continuation of that trend would be a good thing.

Here's the key paragraph:

A potential merger between American(AAMRQ.PK) and US Airways(DAL) is widely viewed as "the next transaction" in the airline industry. Anderson didn't mention the two carriers by name.

Maybe Anderson isn't talking about a US/AA merger, but he still favors mergers because mergers will benefit Delta in the long run?

Smisek named the US/AA merger by name and gave it his blessing months ago. My guess is that it would benefit UAL, by possiblymaking it the only USA member of the SA.

The writer of the article is just adding fuel to the current merger speculation by making it sound like Delta wants the US/AA merger.

Delta doesn't want American emerging with it's current management in place. Their plan will not only put AA back into eventual bankruptcy, it will also damage the industry as a whole. AA with Parker in charge would be a stronger competitor, but they know he will act responsibly and won't engage in a race to the bottom. Well.....unless it's a race to the bottom for pilot wages🙂
