It is rumored that DP and US may get a portion of the E-170 back on the property. The operations at Republic have been terrible, with little hope of staffing the E-170 properly anytime soon. Could the aircraft purchase rumors flying around be a quick acquisition of the E-170?

We were just talking about this on another thread. I think they have to wait two years. But that would be great.

We wll have to buy off wexford/republic. Of course the recent increase in credit rating and other related transactions makes capital transactions look less risky. However US has to spend the money and the other guys have to agree on a decent price.

IF and I emphasize IF negotiations happen there are no guarantees on a deal.

Of course B6 could delay its 190 order allowing us to move up our entry into service date. 😉

i really do not know anything . but i would not be surprised if this occured.

With all of that vaunted "Business Acumen" floating around the halls of CCY you would hope that the Republic/Wexford deal had some sort of performance clause that DP and Co. could enforce or leverage to cut a deal to bring flying back in house.

Does anyone know if that's the case? That would be IMO the way to force a favorable deal with Republic. Threaten to tie them up in costly litigtion and all the negative publicity US could generate for Republic.

Something tells me that the so-called "talent"... you know, the folks who the BK court allowed to receive retention bonuses so that US Airways didn't turn into a pillar of salt... lacked such forward thinking and business accumen to obtain a performance clause.

from a friend "high up" at the Sandcastle regarding Republic:

"I did pass your info along, and a critical review of the operation is underway. "

just wondering what "critical" means

Well, if Republic cannot fly the planes, and routes are going uncovered... They should be held accountable IMO.

It is not like they could not have staffed the airline properly, right from the beginning, with the people that were ALREADY flying the planes. Duh.

I guess airline employees, especially pilots, are not so expendable afterall...

Note to Jerry Glass: You were wrong.

US Airways closing express carrier MidAtlantic

PITTSBURGH - US Airways is shutting down express carrier MidAtlantic Airways after less than four years and laying off 368 workers, including 290 in Philadelphia.

MidAtlantic Airways will stop operating May 28, the company said Thursday. Seventy-eight workers will be laid off in Pittsburgh, with the rest of the cuts coming in Philadelphia.

The express service, intended as a feeder airline for US Airways, was launched with great promise in May 2002, when Potomac Air was revived and renamed. Based in Pittsburgh, the division flew Embraer 170 regional jets with 72 seats to six Eastern U.S. destinations. advertisement

The closing of the regional jet unit had been expected. US Airways sold the assets of MidAtlantic to Indianapolis commuter carrier Republic Airways during its last bankruptcy.

Potomac Air was created in late 2000 and began flying in early 2001 from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. At its peak, it served 15 destinations in the Northeast. Potomac Air operations were halted following the Sept. 11 attacks and the closure of Reagan National.

UDS Airways is headquartered in Tempe.

Aha! Some discrepencies in the article... the original idea was to "revive Potomac Air" and rename it MidAtlantic Airways. In the end MDA had nothing to with Ptomac, it was simply a "division" of mainline, meaning mainline certificate with different contracts. MidAtlantic was never an "express carrier" because it was never a carrier. Clearly the article is based on US Airways spin rather than facts.

Basically they parked a bunch of planes, laid employees off, bought new planes, and brought the same employees back at drastic pay cuts.

Yes, MidAtlantic is long gone. However, I have heard ALPA has been approached by the Co. looking for "acceptable" rates for the E-170 to be added to the Mainline E-190 aircraft. EDITED BY MODERATOR USA320PILOT, have you heard anything about this?
It's looking more and more like Republic has bit off more than they can chew...

What is missing here is that Republic is not going to give those planes back for free, and you can be sure that their lawyers made sure of it.

Does the Republic operation suck? Of course. Does US have the cash to pay the ransome to get it back? Probably not.
