How about we take a step back and take a breath.
I think banning anything is a bad idea except for the extremes such as RPG's, mines... stuff like that. Banning an assault weapon or other similar weapons is not going to solve anything. The people who get illegal weapons will be able to get assault weapons as easy as anything else.
I think the issue needs to be addressed from the beginning of the process. Guns need to have a title of of ownership from the get go. You sell a gun you transfer the title. The buyer has to be verified through federal data base. It's going to take a few generations for the illegal weapons to fade away but at some point if all weapons have a paper trail there should not be many illegal weapons out there.
Owners need to take responsibility. The guns need to be locked up and secured when not in use. They need to be a certified gun safe.
No system is perfect but the one we have sucks and the 20 dead kids are proof of that.
