This is something US,DL,and AA are all guilty of having large commuter operations that are larger than their mainline operations, but US is by far the worst with I believe 162 Express flights, only one of which has a capacity of more than 50, with approx 54 Mainline/Shuttle flights, the majority of which are 120 seat A-319's. At least AA and DL are smart enough to operate a fairly large number of their Mainline flights with 757's, as do NW and UA. Perhaps in the future this new proposal may force US (and AA and DL) to operate more Mainline and less Express flights, with hopefully at least 1/3 of the US Express flights being on aircraft larger than 50 seats such as the CRJ-700/900, EMB-170/175 and if ordered the Dash 8-Q400. The beautiful US LGA Terminal is heavily underutilized and in a HUGE market like NYC the demand for additional capacity is certaintly there.
