False Victory By Amfa

We need to keep our sense of humor during this campaign and one of the biggest jokes I've heard over the past six months is that AMFA reduced outsourcing at Northwest Airlines by 62% because it negotiated contract language that gives NWA the green light to outsource 38% of their work. AMFA's delusional theory is that NWA had the potential to farm-out all of its work under the IAM contract (even though NWA didn't). By cutting NWA's theoretical ability to outsource from 100% to 38%, SHAZAMM, AMFA claims to have cut outsourcing by 62%!

What's truely amazing is that AMFA doesn't seem embarrassed by the stupidity of this argument. Here are the facts:

In January 2004, under AMFA, NWA was outsourcing 8 out of 12 "C" Checks, much of it going overseas. This represents a dramatic increase in outsourcing that reflects the shut down of NWA's Atlanta Overhaul base, and job loss for nearly 50% of AMFA's members.

In contrast, under TWU at American Airlines, 100% of the "C" Checks are being done in-house by TWU members. By keeping all three of our maintenance bases open, we have saved thousands of jobs directly at the bases. At the line stations we averting the massive lay offs that would have occurred through bumping if a base had been closed.

Moreover, the TWU is the only union in the industry to win a settlement that states that our SCOPE clause ensures that all "A" Checks, "B" Checks and "C" Checks will be done on U.S. soil by our members with the exception of aircraft that require "A" Checks overseas to safely return home.

Our members aren't stupid. We don't want AMFA's theoretical outsourcing protections that end up putting us on the unemployment line. We want real protections that the TWU has won to secure our jobs.

BTW, I personally don't think AMFA will file with 50% plus 1 cards, but if AMFA squeaks out 50%, our members will stick with the TWU and send AMFA packing.

I believe the claim was that they cut the companys right to contract out by 62% since under the IAM they could have contracted it all out, like with the TWU/AA building cleaners, or most of it out like the with the TWU/AA cabin cleaners.

In contrast, under TWU at American Airlines, 100% of the "C" Checks are being done in-house by TWU members. By keeping all three of our maintenance bases open, we have saved thousands of jobs directly at the bases. Who is we? The TWU? The fact is that the TWU originally suggested shrinking the airline. THE COMPANY rejected this offer saying that it was unacceptable because they wanted to maintain their operations. The fact is that the company was able to maintain their operations with less people, in other more than neccissary were laid off thanks to the loss of one weeks vacation by every member.

Moreover, the TWU is the only union in the industry to win a settlement that states that our SCOPE clause ensures that all "A" Checks, "B" Checks and "C" Checks will be done on U.S. soil by our members with the exception of aircraft that require "A" Checks overseas to safely return home.

Oh yea. We were worried that AA was going to build yet another hangar so they could do B and C checks overseas. The fact is there is nothing really new in the settlement.

Our members aren't stupid.

Thats right. They can see what the TWU has done to their pay an benifits over the last twenty years. And thats why they are going to vote them out.

We don't want AMFA's theoretical outsourcing protections that end up putting us on the unemployment line. We want real protections that the TWU has won to secure our jobs.

Oh yea, and what are they? "Dont send it out, we will open up our contract and take another paycut and give away whats left of our benifits"?

BTW, I personally don't think AMFA will file with 50% plus 1 cards, but if AMFA squeaks out 50%, our members will stick with the TWU and send AMFA packing.

And what will you have to say if AMFA files with considerably more than 50% + 1? See ya later TWU, HELLO AMFA!?

Ok Moron, what would you do if you owned a company and your docile union agreed to the lowest average wage in the industy, the least days of vacation in the industry, the least days of sick leave allowed with the first two at half pay per occurence, and the only OSM program in the industry? And what if the three cities your maintenance bases were located in donated millions of dollars to keep those bases open? You would be laughing all the way to the bank and give the unions all the credit in the "absolute world" for your newfound success. On the other hand if your unions refused to submit to your every demand you would brutally punish them into submission. In times like these only the strong unions will survive. We shall soon see which ones they are. Rob

Please explain Birdman:

Who is the TWU competing against for heavy maintenance?
(Hint it is not NW, United or SW.)

All we are doing is competing against cost with these same airlines to produce an Aircraft for about the same cost.

These 3 airlines amfa represents have chosen due to the weak representation to outsource and the TWU has chosen to aggressively fight to keep the work in-house. That is the difference in Representation.

As the legislative person for amfa sits in the shadows, The TWU leaders and members are aggressively fighting to keep members and work in-house! That is the difference in Representation!

So if TWU represented overhaul maint is competing aganst TIMCO etc, and Fleet is competing against Worldwide and Swissport etc where does our union advantage kick in? The whole premise of Industrial unionism is that since they represent everybody that the company can not piecemeal out work right? Isnt that supposed to be the advantage, that we can work together and stop production? So in other words being in the same union as all those other classifications offers no advantage with the TWU?

Our contract group includes Line maint, Timco does not provide Line maint. So because we are all under the same contract, in theory, we should tell the company no, you are not contracting that out, it is a strike issue and we have the ability to shut you down.

However your idea of unionism is to fork over whatever the company wants whenever they say boo. And then come up with all these weak excuses for your failure to act like a union.

You talk of "aggressively fighting" when in fact we have been surrendering. You dont seem to know the difference between the two words, like your difficulty with except vs accept. How can you claim we are fighting when the company demanded $660 million in concessions and within weeks you gave them every penny that they demanded? Your thought process would be comical if not for the fact that it has done so much damage to our profession.

Bob, even though cio posted the above quote it is actually jim liitle that carries this mantra. He will carry it right to sonny's office and say that he lost AA AMTs while on HIS watch!

Hey, cio, tell us all how an industrial union can represent skilled and unskilled.
Hurry, the vote will be sooner than you think.
GO AMFA!
