FBI "DATA MINING"

Information gathering is indeed a scary proposition.

I find those "loyalty" programs at the grocery store and pharmacies particularly unnerving. "They" know what your spending habits are, what you buy, when you buy and probably even why you buy. Friday night purchase of the party-size bottle of Jack Daniels could be translated into some problems at work.

What do they do with that information? Someday, they could sell it to insurance companies. So, now they know I love my Coco Puffs, fruit pies and frozen pizzas. Not a very healthy diet, is it? Am I setting myself up for higher insurance rates because I might be making myself ripe for diabetes? Clogged arteries? Dental problems?

My advice here is to buy your booze and tobacco cash only in another neighborhood.

I must sign off now. I am hearing those "whoop-whoop" sounds right before the black helicopter shows up.

Seriously, all this spying stuff is really scary.

Often, those "loyalty" programs are a prerequisite to getting any advertised discounts. My solution: Sign up using a false name, address, etc.

Usually they give you your discount card on the spot and don't check on the information anyway. That way you can get your loyalty discount and keep your privacy. And it's kind of fun to beat them at their own game.

Works well as long as you remember not to use an ATM or credit card for your purchase.

I pretty much avoid using my real name and address in those "loyalty" programs.

Better yet, swap cards back and forth with other people. Let the store's marketing people figure out why someone buys organic chamomile tea and tofu one day; pork rinds and motor oil another day! 😀

Most chains, having figured out that there really aren't hundreds of thousands of people with names like Abraham Lincoln, Charlie Brown, etc., have changed their computers to link the affinity card with the card, ATM or Debit, used for the purchase.

Good to see your 'handle' again. Are you still at the Lazy U?

Thanks,
Yes I am still here at the ‘Lazy U’.
Too old to quit and too young to retire (even with my PBGC cheese).

How are you doing?

Take Care,
B) UT
