What's new

First Paycheck for 2013 less than 2012

People arent getting rich off your money by being poor.

No, but those receiving "public assistance" aren't exactly feeling the same pain they would have if they would have in the 1950's or 1970's.

Back then, you didn't get your Obamafone.

You didn't get free bus fare.

You didn't get free or reduced rate lunches for your kids at school, or free before/after-school child care.

You certainly didn't get a debit card for buying Big Gulps, deli counter sandwiches, or donuts.

Add all that up, and there's less reason to try and get off that assistance.

A couple weeks ago, there was an article in my news feed which showed that single moms on welfare had more disposable income than a working single mom receiving no assistance.

You'd think that being on welfare wouldn't be something to look up to, but when it's more profitable to be unemployed than to be working two jobs to make ends meet, there's something seriously wrong with the system...

Thats where people get confused, they believe that Capitalism and Democracy and Freedom are an unalterable package, that in order for any of them to exist they must all be in place. Democracy and Freedom can exist without Capitalism.

Exactly.

Many also forget that Capitalism =/= Democracy..

You're right, there is something wrong. It's wrong how cheap our labor has become, that someone on assistance has more spending money than a single working mother, (if your newsfeed is correct). Minimum wage should be raised so people don't have to work 3 jobs to get by.

And the obama phone?

Here is an example, I cut and paste from an email - in it, a Ford dealer salesman describes what he witnessed.

[background=transparent]> A Ford Dealer's Report - From Tom Selkis' (Latham Ford) Facebook - True
> story yesterday at the dealership.
> "I'll try to make this as short and to the point as I can.
> One of my salesmen here had a woman in his office yesterday wanting to
> lease a brand new Focus.
> As he was reviewing her credit application with her he noticed she was on
> social security disability.
> He said to her you don't look like you're disabled and unable to work.
> She said well I'm really not. I could work if I wanted to, but I make
> more now than I did when I was working and got hurt (non-disabling injury).
> She said the gov't sends her $1500.00 a month in 1 check. And she gets
> $700.00 a month on an EBT card (food stamps), and $800.00 a month for rent.
> Oh yeah, and 250 minutes free on her phone.
> That is just south of $3500.00 a month
> When she was working, she was taking home about $330.00 per week.
> Do the math and then ask yourself why the hell should she go back to
> work

> If you multiply that by millions of people, you start to realize the
> scope of the problem we face as a country.
> Once the socialists have 51% of the population in that same scenario, we
> are finished.
> The question is when do we cross that threshold if we haven't already,
> and there are not enough people working to pay enough taxes to support the non-working people? Riots?? Be prepared to protect your homes.
She didn't lease the Focus here because the dealer down the road beat our deal by $10.00/month.Glad to know she is so frugal with her hard earned money."

I love the right wing email that labels socialists. And yet, you're in a union, pushing for another union (AMFA). Ironic, eh?

How is it you think you schooled me?
they didn't because you addressed unemployment insurance which is indeed paid by the employer; they responded w/ a quote about unemployment compensation.
Unemployment compensation benefits were extended for another year as part of the fiscal cliff bill.

Really, forget politics, are you saying you're ok with people gaming the system as illusratated in the post? BTW. I have never been a single issue voter. You obviously have your mind made up that liberal politicians are the only ones that help union workers. With the new payroll taxes kicking in this year, thats about $3K more this year my family will be paying. Is that what the middle class needs right now? Ironic. Phhht.

The social security increase is just a return to the original rate. Obama gave you a tax holiday for the last year of 2% off your social security. All that happened is that it is back to what it was meant to be and you just didn't thank anyone for the increase while you had it.

It was actually a two year temporary rate reduction (2011 and 2012), but your point is still valid. It merely returns the FICA rate to where it had been for many years. IMO, reducing it from 6.2% to 4.2% was a mistake.

The FICA rate returns to the same 6.2% it's been for many years. Granted, if your family had trouble paying the social security taxes for all the years prior to 2011, then ending the temporary rate reduction will once again cause some hardship. I was not in favor of reducing social security taxes precisely because people would get used to the reduced rate and would complain if/when it was ever restored to the earlier rate of 6.2%.

A UNION by design is not supposed to be a political entity. It has been warped into that over the years. A UNION's function is supposed to be representation and collective bargaining for employee working conditions, pay, and benefits. I paid TWU to represent me not to fund the socialist agenda.

Maybe you would have more spending money if the government were not robbing your check to pay for people gaming the system. Raising minimum wage does not work. That causes a chain reaction that inevitably leads to price increase for all goods and services.

People complain about how cheap our labor has become. Our government and American businesses have answered that complaint with embracing illegal immigration, H1-B Visas, and rampant outsourcing.

Your pay is being lowered and then divided. Welcome to Socialism 101.

Socialism 101? Did you take such a class? Probably not because once again you are citing the wrong 'ism" for what annoys you.

Illegal immigration, visas and outsourcing. Who benefits from expanding the pool of labor? Socialists who claim that they want workers to own the means of production or Capitalists who want a huge surpluss of workers that would have to compete with other workers for employment?

The cure for unemployment is simple, reduce the workweek to 32 hours with no reduction in pay with penalties for company's that force workers to work more than that. That would drive up demand for labor by 20%.

It is ironic that La li Lu.....claims to be so against social programs while enjoying the benefits of one. It is people like La le lu... that is supposed to help.

I too agree that there is abuse that could be stopped if we could get past the stigma of the user being some kind of leach. That is not the case in a vast majority.

Throwing around blanket statements like socialism does nothing but further the rhetoric and partisan divide.
Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) Extended to January 2, 2013

EUC is a 100% federally funded program that provides benefits to individuals who have exhausted regular state benefits. The EUC program was created on June 30, 2008, and has been modified several times. Most recently, the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012 (P.L. 112-96) extended the expiration date of the EUC program to January 2, 2013 and made several modifications to the program.
It depends on how long you are on unemployment whether this kicks in. The above, as WT pointed out, was extended as part of the fiscal cliff legislation.

And just what social program do you think I benefit from?

Or are you quoting something and speaking to someone else?
