If it has to be enforced by the court against the popular vote one could argue that it is not very popular. Quite a few (majority in the states with the ban) seem to be quite comfortable denying equal rights based on prejudice. So long as it's not their rights who are being deprived people seem to be good with it. The idea of 'legal precedent' seems to lost on many.

Actually the SCOTUS struck down anti-sodomy laws and I'm not aware of any other sexual restrictions.

Fine. Expressing ones love in the form of marriage is restricted in some states.
