Gonzales and the DOJ

5th justice official resigns amid the firing scandal. Seems when the W administration screws up, they don;t do it half ass like they do everything else.

Number 5 and counting

I'm going to miss W when he is gone. The republicans always have the best scandals. Best the Dems can do is BJ in the Oval. The repubs trade arms for hostages, obstruction (Scooter) and now the DOJ. Gotta love em.

Atleast 2 of the scandals did not bleed into one. Afterall, it was a DOJ Prosecutor, Patty Fitzgerald, who prosecuted Scooter.

Perhaps Patty was just ticked because he had learned that he was basically on the list of "to-be-fired" US Attorneys even though he is probably the best US Attorney right now.

I am not convinced that Mr. Libby will be doing time or if he does, I think it will be a short stay. W has nothing to worry about any more. He is not up for re-election. The republican Presidential field has no interest in having W associated with their campaign (several of them trashed him in the ‘debates’) so it’s not like he will be burning any good will by issuing a pardon. As discussed in a different thread, W has already issued more pardons than the previous administration at this same time in their term. If there is a down side to him granting a pardon, I do not see it and I have not heard anyone discuss it.

If for some strange reason W does not issue a pardon, I would love to see Scooters numbered bank accounts in the Caymans or Switzerland. You can bet there was a boatload of cash transferred in there to keep his mouth shut and pockets full. Who says loyalty can’t be bought.

My money is on a pardon. Clean, simple and no chance of a trail being picked up.

i also think Gonzalez is going to be walking pretty soon as well.

William Mercer, the Justice Department’s acting third-in-command, had announced his resignation — just days before he was scheduled to appear at a Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing Tuesday.

Mercer is the sixth Gonzales underling to leave amid the U.S. Attorney Mess

Said Senator Schumer: “The attorney general is running out of fall guys. Six resignations into the U.S. attorney firing scandal, the attorney general inexplicably still acts as though he has the confidence and support of the country. He has neither.â€￾

And now Gonzalez is being asked to look into whether or not Cheney is part of the executive branch and is required to hand over classified documents to the archive for handling. His partiality has been some compromised he has screwed his own CIC. Gotta love the Repubs. Give them a little bit of power for a few years and look what happens. I yearn for the good old days when the worst that happens is someone gets a blow job in the Oval.

I liked the comment Feinstien made about with holding funds for the VP office till he decides if he is part of the executive branch or not. That would be hilarious.

The amount of corruption and sheer arrogance in this administration is mind boggling. With every passing day, they are handing the Dems more and more votes. I am surprised that the Repubs have not sat down with Cheney and told him to back off and shut up along with his puppet W. They have set the right wing back decades.

In all fairness don't forget about the Bay of Pigs and the Gulf of Tonkin incedent.

I am talking recent history (20 years or so) you are going back 40 years. If you want to play that game, as I recall, Reagan had the most admin officials under investigation of any admin. W seems to be making a bid for Dumb A$$ POTUS of the millennia. He is going to replace Carter as the POTUS punching bag.

So now your going accuse me of playing that "game". All I did was point out a simple historical fact. I think you would be hard pressed to call me a right wing reactionary.

Now if you want to play games I could accuse you of playing "games" as well. The game being you trying to imply that something that happened forty years ago is not as bad as something that happened twentry due soley to the time difference.

Did not mean it that way and I apologize. I just figure at some point a line should be drawn. I'm not going back to Watergate because that just seems like old old news. Even the Iran/Contra deal is old and I'm not sure why I put that in there. I just randomly drew a line at about 20 years because it just seems like going back farther than that is an exercise in futility. I am sure we can go back to the birth of the nation to find asinine decisions and actions but what point does that serve?

You are most certainly not a reactionary. You seem to be fairly middle of the road and I enjoy our discussions.

I know this is off topic but speaking of the Bay of Pigs. What is this hard on we have for Castro and Cuba. It is a tiny island in the Caribbean. The have got squat for military. They are not an economic threat to anyone. Yet China, a some what larger nation who has committed far worse human right transgressions than Cuba, has a military that is just a wee bit bigger and stronger than Cubas, they have the nuke as well but they have MFN status. WTF? Did Castro give someone a wedgy back in the days and no one will forgive him? I mean I can travel to China and put money into their economy but I cannot go lay on a beach in Cuba? OK, I really can but I have to fly to Mexico or Venezuela firsts and pay cash for everything so that Uncle Sam does not find out.

At the very least the policy is duplicitous, at the worst it is down right stupid and a waste of time, money and effort. OH, yea, the rest of the world trades and vacations there.

No harm done. I think Barrack Obama hit the nail on the head when he said not to long ago that neither political party can claim virtue.

As far as Cuba is concerned I think what the driving force behind the embargo now is fear. Not fear of Castro because lets face it in a one on one fight his military would be a speed bump. What every president up for reelection or presidential candidate is afraid of is the Cuban vote in Florida. It's a very powerful voting block down there in Florida. That's why you didn't see Gore or Bush in 2000 go there and talk about normalizing relations with Cuba. If either one of them had done that there would have been no need for a recount.

IMO there won't be any opening of relations with Cuba until Castro falls over dead. However probably the worst thing we could do to Hugo Chavez is to normalize relations with Cuba. While Castro might rant and rave about the evil US he's also a survivor. Which means he's a pragmatist. He knows that while Hugo might give Cuba oil and look up to him he knows that the US can do a lot more for him economically than Venezuela.

I understand the political fear now with regard to the voting block in Florida, but I guess I do not understand the extreme measures that were taken. No trade, no visitation rights …. Nothing. Hell, I was allowed to visit East Germany and Czech when it was eastern block. US citizens were able to visit Russia when they were the bad guys. I can visit China today if I want to. I understand not liking them because they are the bad 'commies' but this seems to be taking it to an extreme. Like some child stomping off the play ground with all his toys.

I get the 'reasoning' behind it as warped as it is but I don't get the mentality behind it of those thinking it will work. It's been what 40 years 50 years (I don't feel like looking it up). I am thinking it won't work. Find a new way and move on but politicians can't do that because they were emasculated as a condition of being elected.

And agreed, all parties are incompetent and cater to the lowest members of our society.

Was it really ours to give away? Yes, we did build it (for our own advantage) but it is part of Panama.

Seems to me control was returned to it's rightful owner. I am not sure how the revenues were split up but considering we 'owned' it for several decades, I am guessing we have been reimbursed for our investment.

Aside from that, W starting the Iraq war pretty much trumps anything else out there in my book and I do not think I am even close to being alone in that belief.
