Hire the NW mechs who were locked out. My experience.

Since hiring some of the NW mechs who were locked out last summer our business has realized a higher skill level. We have found that the former NW mechs on our payroll have experience with reading blueprints, building new, excellent repair skills and a high learning curve.

These mechs also like their new workplace and the blend nicely. They also seem quite happy to be settled in a new union workplace.

NW's loss is our gain.

There are things some people who just study statistics just don't understand. These kinds of skills takes YEARS to develop. (especially Welding!)

You're lucky Necro that you picked up on this. Many companies started to "harvest" striking MX right after the strike started... They knew how valuable these guys are...

Kudo's to you're company for recognizing what NWA failed to see, that being a highly trained and experienced mechanic is worth his/her weight in gold. Im glad to hear these mechanics have been able to move on and find rewarding jobs with employers who appreciate the skills they bring with them.

I'll continue further by stating that as part of the interview process I've been impressed by the former NW applicants. Before when hiring new employees we have not always been able to tap such a good resource.

Ulimately a good employer will see skilled employees as the asset that they are rather than take the negative route to lower wage scale. Don't ask me if NW execs want to operate an airline. I question there motives.

Beyond tech school and/or (UHEM) military service there is a working society that needs to be served. It has been my experience that a corporation/institution and a union together provide the much needed checks and balances. In such an industrial workplace like mine this is a great system.

I would like to see more of us who outside of the airline segment of the transportation industry get involved in such a pro active way. I doubt that this will happen but it's a nice thought.

As I've stated before on this forum, my employer manufactures industrial service machines. Industrial scrubbers, sweepers and carpet cleaners are our biggest selling lines.

Depending upon specific job union mechanics in this industry earn $16-$27 per hour. Powdered metal, fabrication and bench work of sorts cover most positions.

You know Necro, If I was still tangled in a contracting job I had I would have hired someone with Avionics background in a heartbeat. Infact, not naming WHERE but I know a bunch who got into it and they are making $30+ an hour and they can work at their OWN pace. They can get a job done faster than many of those who have been in the contracting business. Employers are amazed at their work ethics (read: they don't do budwiser breakfasts, rather breakfast burrito at Mc Donalds)

Hey Jenny, this merger thing @ US Airways just might supply somemore good mechanics/avionics techs. Hopefully you won't be receiving a pm from me asking for your source.

I aint a lawyer type, so I may be wrong on my legel beagle definitions, but I was under the impression that AMFA was on a recogniZed, legal strike. At what point in time did it become a legallly recognised lockout? Also, what, technically for those of us who are not hanger lawyers, is the difference in the eyes of the law?
 
essentially, NWA mgmt locked out all of the striking mechanics but by the RLA the lock out is actually a strike. I am not sure if there is a full difference but this is how I see it

When we got there Aug 20, there was literature all over the facility, and on the computer explaining how one could stay on if one chose. Were these just props to fool us coming in, or perhaps placed there on purpose so as to give the lawyers an out so they could claim it was a strike, and not a lock out? Also, has anyone notified the few picketers left? All their signs say "STRIKE". Perhaps that is just a typo.....

It's still like that. One can stay if they choose. Lockout is to counteract a Strike. However this one is letting former employees trickle back in. AMFA declared a strike since the company put out some garbage agreement, the group of employees do not have the same postion anymore and is not allowed back to work so it is a lock out.

Still on strike (fact 1) employees not having their postions back in essence locked out (fact 2)

If you guys noticed the props to be fooled back in, then you guys are fools?
