ISP UPDATE!!!!!!!

The only recent news is an article about the new Southwest wing that was in this week's Long Island Business News. It shows an artist's rendering of the completed project. The architect says that the entire project should take 16-18 months and should commence in a few weeks. The surprise (to me) was that the new east concourse will have 2 commuter gates on the lower level in addition to eight gates for SWA on the upper level.

Happy Holidays to all!

ISP may be getting a new tower, according to Suffolk Life:

A new air traffic control tower could soon be on the horizon for Long Island's MacArthur Airport, as local and state officials are pushing for the Islip facility to receive a $1 million grant from the federal government for the project.

According to information issued by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-NY) office and the town of Islip, the pending grant, which was first set in motion by Clinton and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), was approved earlier this month by the Senate's Appropriation Committee and is presently subject to Congress' approval. If sanctioned, the MacArthur grant would likely be utilized to complete a tower by 2007.

In 2001, the airport received a similar grant in the amount of some $350,000 that helped to fund the various design costs associated with the new tower.

"These new funds would be a big help in dealing with traffic within Long Island's skies," explained Schumer in a statement issued to Suffolk Life last week. "As more and more people from around the country fly into Islip, it's great news that we may have new money to fund a new tower."

Specifically, representatives from Clinton's office stated last week that the new tower would help keep air traffic control capacity on par with the Islip airport's growth. In addition, the pending $1 million grant would also allow the airport to meet new security benchmarks necessary within the post-9/11 era.

"We thank senators Schumer and Clinton for their continued support of Islip's Long Island MacArthur Airport, as well as for their efforts in keeping it one of the safest and best regional airports in the country," said Islip Town Supervisor Pete McGowan of the possible grant last week.

Throughout the last year, Schumer and Clinton have been clear supporters of maintaining MacArthur's service and safety on a number of issues. In particular, the two were outspoken proponents in pushing the Transportation Security Administration this summer to reserve job cuts and retain security screeners for safety purposes.

The news of a possible new tower comes on the heels of a $40 million project that will see MacArthur host a new terminal including four arrival and departure gates as well as a bevy of upgraded amenities. That project, which is mostly funded by Southwest Airlines, kicked off in the spring and will conclude sometime next year.

No additional information regarding the pending grant was available as of late last week, and there was no word on when Congress might take action on the new measure. Telephone calls placed to MacArthur officials last week were referred to the town of Islip's Public Information Department.
