Taken from Jetwire...

Unfortunately, we now expect that approximately 1,600 jobs will be affected at this time, including reductions announced earlier that will impact the Kansas City maintenance base. Jobs in Airport Services, Cargo and Flight Service also will be affected. At this time, we estimate reductions in the range of 40 positions at MCIE, 300 in Airport Services, 50 in Cargo and up to 1,200 in Flight Service.

Will there be commensurate cuts in management positions as well, or will labor bear the brunt of this employee fire sale too?

Is there still room to cut more FSM's? They have some pretty large groups as it is.

I am guessing the flight service cuts will happen around Labor day as travel begins to slow further.

“The cuts we implemented last year have been helpful, and as a result, we did not make major changes to our summer schedule,â€￾ Arpey said. “But looking forward, we think an adjustment to our fall schedule is warranted, so we are making additional cuts beginning in late August.â€￾

American will reduce capacity 5.5 percent on international routes, compared to the two percent reduction that the carrier had projected in April. Domestic capacity will be down 7.5 percent, one percentage point lower than the April estimates.

For the full year, American’s capacity will be down 7.5 percent compared to 2008, one point deeper than earlier projected. Domestic capacity will be off 9 percent, unchanged compared to the April estimates, while international capacity will be down 4.5 percent, an additional two points.

“We are not sugar-coating what we and every other airline is up again in the current climate,â€￾ Arpey said.

From the Lauri Curtis Hotline:

Working with Crew Resources, we have determined that based largely on three factors: - less than expected attrition, flight attendants returning to work from overage leaves and capacity reductions- we are looking at an overage of up to 1200 flight attendants beginning in October. I am deeply saddened to tell you that this means that on/around June 18 we will be sending Subject to Furlough/WARN letters to the 1200 most junior flight attendants on the system seniority list via two-day FEDEX. All 1200 flight attendants will receive a Subject to Furlough notice. Additionally, those flight attendants based at LGA, ORD, and IOR will receive a WARN letter in addition to the Subject to Furlough Notice, due to the number of flight attendants who may be affected at those bases in order to satisfy the requirements of New York and Illinois state law. The WARN letter will be included as an enclosure to the Subject to Furlough Notice.

The most senior flight attendant who is subject to furlough has a seniority number of 15,681 (as of June 11, 2009) and an occupational seniority date of December 17, 1999.

What exactly is flight service? 1200 who?

Again the F/A's continue to take the brunt of the reductions across the system. Directly from my base manager to my ears she told me that pilots continue to be recalled as we continue to redce F/A staffing..She doesn't understand what's going on, nor the logic behind it. STL will have over 25% of its base furloughed. Looks like I will be on the unemployment line again, but at least I will have the holidays off this year. What is our "So called" union going to do for us now? Hmmmm...Let me guess, NOTHING!

I think having 4 management people doing the same job daily is very effeicient for the American Airlines standard. It's exciting watch them walk all over each other daily attempting to "justifiy" their existence.

No one can understand what happened?

Your union gave it all away!

Furlough pay given eliminated in the 2003 RPA!

Letters of Agreement to reduce staffing on aircraft/routes while thousands were still furloughed!

And absolutely no respect for seniority!

The APFA showed no respect for the FA profession; unfortunately you will get no respect from AA.

Do they still have a limit on the recall rights? If so, hopefully, they will get rid of that furlough drop off, and have unlimited recall rights, like most other airlines.

Sorry to hear this is happening, yet again. I hope most of the layoffs will be mitigated with VLOA's.

Let's hope the voluntary options help - again. I do think the other airlines have a limit on recall.

Possibly part of the difference is that pilots have to retire at the age of 60 - no ifs ands or butts. On the other hand, FAs can continue flying as long as they can pass their annual requal. tests. There are quite a few older FAs still flying - maybe some encouragement in the form of a retirement incentive from the company - just something.... Anyway good luck.

Well, I think we all knew this was coming when they announced PLOAs for the summer travel months. I guess this is the end of this glamorous career for me. I was trying to hang on to get 10 years in; so, I could get retiree travel benefits, but because of the last furlough I was already going to have to work until I am almost 67 to get my 10 years. This will just push it that much further into the future.

Interestingly, I just told a family member yesterday that I thought this was coming; so, I was going to start looking for a job right away.

I am approx. 625 down from the most senior f/a subject to furlough. Based on the results of the April furloughs (410 subject to furlough, 323 eventually furloughed), I doubt seriously that there will be many of us in the 1200 still working after Sept. 30th.
