Layoffs announced at AA

Well, if AA was offering leaves even during the busy summer travel season, could it be that AA was running fat in the Flight Services department for a good while?

Interesting that now that naative f/a's are being affected by furloughs people seem to care about things like furlough pay and unlimited recall....something we (former TW) have been fighting for for years.
I guess that's human nature.

From the APFA hotline

Accordingly, the company has just today delivered to APFA a WARN letter advising of up to 1,200 possible furloughs to be effective October 1, 2009.

This is clearly disappointing news for our work force, most especially so for those who may be directly affected through job loss.

Our Flight Attendant workforce has just seen one recent furlough of over 320 members, despite repeated efforts to mitigate the cuts through voluntary means.

It is frankly unclear how many of the 1,200 potential furloughs can be avoided in this round. Though this number may seem larger than the announced capacity cuts would warrant, there are a number of factors to keep in mind:

One: there are existing overages currently offset by leaves. A significant number of Flight Attendants will be returning to the line this summer, adding to the current manning total;

Two: we have been seeing lower attrition rates than planned; and

Three: members have shown less of an appetite for the latest proffered and bid leave offerings.

Meantime, if you frequently drop your entire schedule or selected trips, or if you are otherwise in a position to either reduce your flying through leaves or partnerships—even through retirement—we encourage you to inform yourself of the options and, in electing one, save a job of a fellow member in this difficult time.

Everyone is hooked on this furlough pay... give it up...
It was maybe 2 months pay if that.....
Come on this is American Airlines...
Please, it was nothing to bank on...

As for recall rights... I think the 5 year cap is in place because anyone who has been out for 5 years would most likely have a bad taste for the company, job and coworkers... New blood needed...

I think it is unfortunate that AA chose to announce the cuts one day after the closing of the last proffer for PLOA. Knowing full well some people could, or would have used the opportunity to help offset the huge number of people facing furlough.

If they offer an additional PLOA, and have a larger variety of leaves, those people already on the list closing on the 10th will be ineligible to take anything else.

Another example of AA putting it to the hourly guys. The skipping on the WARN letters last go round to dump people off quick and easy and again waiting until the close of a PLOA to announce drastic cuts. When they should have already known of this huge overage.

Gimme a break. You could look at it another way: The junior FA's that do *not* receive a furlough this round could form a bad taste in their mouths, knowing they may be furloughed down the road, and never given an opportunity to come back with the expiration of recall rights. That affects the company immediately.

"New blood needed"... Really? How typically AArogant...

BTW, at another airline, we have had Invol furloughs come back after many, many years on furlough, and I have yet to find a horribly bitter one to fly with....

You can never tell what the future holds as far as more furloughs....You must always PlAAn for tomorrow...
This is just my take on things ... 19yrs of seeing all this...

Since the 5 year rule has been in the CBA since before I had started. I am wondering how much money and what work rules would everyone be willing to give up to receive unlimited recall rights? American made it very clear it wasn't going to be for free.

You are clearly not being affected by any of this and it's sad that you have such a "better you than me" attitude. What you can't seem to grasp is that the company is less likely to furlough if they have to pay two months salary to each person furloughed...EACH time they furlough. APFA giving away furlough pay won by the hard work of true unionists set the f/a profession back YEARS...and reduced the most junior to seasonal help.
Shortly over a thousand of your coworkers are about to loose their jobs and I for one don't know ANYONE that couldn't use 2 months salary in a situation such as this.

No one believes someone facing furlough couldn't use 2 months pay. It was removed by john ward and as I am sure you recall we tried to vote it down. It managed to pass in some shady AA/john ward deal.

Thank you Mikey! I know that these threads tend to get shut down the minute they get interesting but I for one appreciate that you GET it.

Less likely to furlough because of furlough pay??? Come on ... Once again this is American Airlines... Surely you know how they operate by now or maybe not...
