As of 7pm today the company released a press release stating the firm agreements for more aircraft from Airbus: A350XWB's(800-900), A330's, A340's, and narrow body A319-20 and 21's. This a day after they announce the closure of PIT. Begs me to ask if Airbus had a say in this? Stock holders? Or just plain ignorance. Gee Pittsburgh... If we close you, we can buy more aircraft..... WOW.... Also for further reading pleasure the street.com had an article the pilot group have enough signitures to dercertify ALPA and go with US Pilots Association. Now let me ask all who are in the know... Where are the new hardware going? East... West... First round of deliveries come in 2009. What other surprises do we have for tommorrow?

Just my opinion...

Wasn't the number that Doug put out there $40 million per year that PIT is costing?

That won't buy one of those Airbuses....well, maybe a 320. (BoeingBoy will correct this within the hour if I'm wrong with retail price, tax, tags and delivery.)

I don't think these two situations are even remotely related.

So what if the closing of PIT allows the company to buy more aircraft? Is that a bad thing? Seems to me more aircraft is a good thing - more passengers - more revenue - more jobs. Go figure - no one on this board is every happy!

If we took delivery in the East, ........ they would need to be staffed by new hires and the pay scale is lower. or delivry to the West will help maintain seperate and compeeting employee groups. Either way, it might help the company continue to drive costs lower.

Some are for new service to China and possible new Euro routes but some (and its a big but) will be replacement A/C.

Who gets what? A west base back east? An east base out west?

One stagnates the other grows.

Play one side against the other.

so what... stop trying to make everything so negative,

Well it's bad timing BUT it is a VERY good thing. PIT people are angry and need time to grieve and move on. However, they knew all too well it was coming - i guess just were in denial.

It would appear this order simply cements the definitive agreement US Airways and Airbus announced in June, not in addition to what was already announced. Nice to see LCC is getting the A350 -900 as well as the -800. Should be some pretty impressive planes which should open up all new route possibilities.

Here's todays announcement,

I've preached that exact sentiment for years. Why is it that the US group is so bitter , angry, etc. Other airlines have followed in their misery but doing much better. Is US such a toxic entity it needs to be changed? Mgt for sure, ALPO for sure now.

But just look at the number of postings at US. Unbelievable! WHY IS THAT ? UAL chp 11, NWA chp 11, Delta chp 11...What is it about US that garners such attention?

Enquiring minds want to know.......

It would be nice to get some equipment to load them, or staffing to work them.

And you would be correct - nothing new here folks. The only thing that surprised me a little was that they didn't convert any of the A332's to A340's in light of the China award, although the delivery schedule is no more specific than "2009 to ....". I guess either the deliveries wouldn't be in time for start of service or they're still hoping for some used A430's on the cheap.
