The Toyota Prius has become the flagship car for those in our society so environmentally conscious that they are willing to spend a premium to show the world how much they care. Unfortunately for them, their ultimate ‘green car’ is the source of some of the worst pollution in North America; it takes more combined energy per Prius to produce than a Hummer.

Building a Toyota Prius causes more environmental damage than a Hummer that is on the road for three times longer than a Prius. As already noted, the Prius is partly driven by a battery which contains nickel. The nickel is mined and smelted at a plant in Sudbury, Ontario. This plant has caused so much environmental damage to the surrounding environment that NASA has used the ‘dead zone’ around the plant to test moon rovers. The area around the plant is devoid of any life for miles.

When you pool together all the combined energy it takes to drive and build a Toyota Prius, the flagship car of energy fanatics, it takes almost 50 percent more energy than a Hummer - the Prius’s arch nemesis.

So, if you are really an environmentalist - ditch the Prius.

Dell its made for the tree hugging looney's that don't have the sense God gave a goose. They b!tch and moan about the environment all the while lining the curb with their weekly trash. Its a mental illness and Gore is their God!!!!!

What have you done to better the environment lately? Don't answer me, answer yourself. If you truly believe you are doing things to help the environment, then you wouldn't make ignorant statements like that. I'm not a huge fan of Al Gore, believe me, but at least he is doing something. Leave out the debate, many people feel there's a problem, and he is trying to do something about it. I'd be willing to bet tonight's dinner that you aren't.

As far as the Prius goes - if all that is true, then it is bad news. I know many people who care deeply about their carbon footprints and the amount of waste they create (including myself), and they are in the school of thought that Hybrids are part of the answer. If nothing else though - what about the benefit of using less imported fossil fuels? That should count for something.

What I would like to see now is the Hummer compared to your average four cylinder car. Or for the fun of it your average six.

Well...I'm out of town now, so I can't hug my tree - but I drive a Prius. I didn't buy it for the carbon footprint - I bought it to save money on gas in a vehicle that can carry 5 people, or can carry my two labrador's to the park when I fold down the rear seat. I've owned it 3 years, and even with gas nearing $3.50 a gallon, have yet to spend $30 to fill it. FWIW, that $30 fill up lasts me two weeks.

Don't give me your holier than thou speech, you polute this planet just like everyone else...PERIOD!

Tell ya what I don't do and thats live in some fantasy land!!!!

The genie has been let out of the bottle, and theres no putting it back.

Yea he lives in a 10,000 square foot mansion and jetsets around the globe in private jets preaching how everyone needs to conserve!

KC good that you can save a few bucks on gas, but it still doesn't change the fact of the environmental damage that the production cost. I get so tired of people who jump on this 'Green' kick when they polute just like everyone on this planet. We could do completely away with Industry in this country and it will not change a GD thing. We are 300 million out of 6.5 billion who are trashing this globe and depleting its resources and the outcome is pretty certain!

I never said I didn't. But at least I try.... I have reduced my consumption and waste creation as much as possible, I reuse things as much as I can, and whatever I can't, I recycle (if I can). Conservation and preservation is aggregate, so my practices are paltry when looked at alone. But across a large amount of people, the benefits are astounding. Even with small things, like using reusable bags when you go shopping instead of those dreadful plastic bags that will be on this earth long after you and I.... it all adds up.

Again, I'm not a fan. But if you're going to bring that up, you should also mention that after he bought the house, he spent several million dollars making it more efficient and environmentally friendly, with clean energy generation on site. But of course, that doesn't suit your argument. I'll agree that flying around the world in a private jet does not help the environment, but he's probably offsetting his own footprint through awareness. We can debate that if you want, but I'll bet you are predisposed to disliking him just because he's Al Gore. I don't like him, but I think he means well.

Something is better than nothing. You are doing nothing (presumably)... but chastising people that actually try. With your logic, we might as well forget about emissions, burn the trash, start up some more styrofoam plants, club the baby seals, spark up a Cuban cigar and laugh about it.

The so called study relied upon by the author of the article linked by the OP has been thoroughly debunked.

Hummer vs. Prius Redux: Prius (Still) Leaves Hummer in the Dust

Well Done, Veritas.

Blaaa....Blaaa....Blaaa!!!!!!!!!

I can debate with you till the cows come home, it won't change your mind and you won't convince me that we make one ounce of difference!

If it helps you to sleep better, then kudos for you.

This Planet Will be here long after we're gone, and we started our countdown a while back.

I can debate with you till the cows come home, it won't change your mind and you won't convince me that we make one ounce of difference!

I would debate with you as long as it takes if you were open-minded enough to eventually understand. If you don't think that the daily practices of 150 million people can't make any difference to the environment, then you might as well be complacent and keep on polluting.

One thing is for certain, however: I can't make you care. You either do, or you don't.

USAir.... I'll let you have the final word, but just to put your mind at ease "I CARE VERY MUCH" about this planet. so much so that I crave nature and every aspect of it, but Im looking at the realities of what Industrialization and the ever growing population expolsion (which go hand in hand) are doing to this planet, Not to mention the natural cycles that wreak havoc every 100,000 years or so.

It is very arrogant to think that we will not have a fate similar to the dinosaurs, difference being we will probably snuff ourselves out before a NEO has the chance. Either way rest assured we're gonna be long gone before this planet succumbs.

Toyota concedes that there is more energy required in the materials production stage for its hybrids, but says that it is overwhelmingly made up by less energy used during its driving lifetime.

While its methodology may remain unclear, the report does include some useful and eye-opening information that few car shoppers had likely even thought about. Hopefully this controversy will spur shoppers to demand more information about the vehicles they drive other than emissions and mpg and consider the big-picture impact.

Yep you debunked it veritas.....
