Making USPS profitable

UPD and Fed Ex also arent' delivering to every home in America every day either, which the USPS was mandated to do...by that very paper you need your AK47 to defend...the US Constitution. Don't tell me...the constitution needs to be changed to address that, but not your AR15...right?

Didn't UPS and Fedex want to go into the mail business a few years back?

It is amazing what you can find on line. I guess for some it is easier to just spout off and hope something sticks.



This is the first paragraph of the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970:

The United States Postal Service shall be operated as a basic and fundamental service provided to the people by the Government of the United States, authorized by the Constitution, created by Act of Congress, and supported by the people. The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall provide prompt, reliable, and efficient services to patrons in all areas and shall render postal services to all communities. The costs of establishing and maintaining the Postal Service shall not be apportioned to impair the overall value of such service to the people.

Then there is the Private Express Statutes (PES) passed in 1792 which gives a monopoly on the carriage and delivery of letter mail.


PES and Mail Box Rule


Basically, the USPS is required to deliver and pick up mail from all locations and cannot adjust prices to cover locations that are remote or low in population. They are not designed to be competitive with FedEx or UPS and the service that USPS provides would disappear with the USPS and not be replaced.

I'm not sure...I DO know that both contracted some services to teh USPS because....they DIDN'T want to go to every home every day. They didn't even want to go to every home even SOME days. I could imagine how well their mail service would be a $11 a delivery.

The USPS works incredibly well given the constraints they operate with. If the USPS were to disappear today, there is a significant portion of the country who would be without reasonably priced delivery service.

If its failing bigtime I can't see how 'incredibly well' fits.
