Machinists at United Airlines Ratify New Agreements

Washington D.C., April 30, 2003, 1:30 AM EDT – The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) today announced ratification of eight agreements covering 30,000 IAM-represented employees at United Airlines.

Our members are providing United Airlines with the means and opportunity to successfully restructure and avoid liquidation, said District 141-M President Scotty Ford, representing Mechanic & Related employees, Fleet Technical Instructors and Maintenance Instructors at United. The problems and solutions of the airline’s latest crisis go far beyond labor costs, but immediate action was needed to ensure the survival of this airline.

70 percent of District 141-M members ratified the new agreements, while 83.2 percent of District 141 members accepted the pacts.

This vote confirms our commitment to the carrier’s recovery, said Randy Canale, President of District 141, representing Ramp & Stores, Public Contact, Security Guards, Food Service Employees and employees of Mileage Plus International. More importantly, these agreements protect the core value of a job at United Airlines. Despite sacrifices, we successfully preserved key benefits won by generations of IAM members at United.
