Here's a different link -- yours didn't work.

Stuff like this has gone on forever. I remember Corporate Security nailing a couple contracted skycaps at JFK back in the 90's for the same thing -- taking cash instead of collecting the overweight or excess bag fees.

The claim they make about it being a safety risk is pure BS. Some airlines might rely on the checked bag counts from the check-in system, but the ones I've worked with still need a cross-check because bag info doesn't always come across automatically for interline bags.

If the DRC is still updated via a stroke count from the bagroom, then there's no unreported bags. Maybe a few overweight bags get missed, but even there, the bagroom can flag it as heavy in the DRC, no?

The ramp scans the bags before loading them on the plane. AA is just about the last major to start scanning as most others have been doing it for years now. Don't think WN scans though.

What's the big deal? If these individuals had MBA after their names and robbed a bunch of workers out of their pension monies, they would be lauded for their business acumem! 😀 The hypocracy of the capitalist system never ceases to amaze me.
