On the Investor call today they announced that the new Europeon cities will be Athens, Brussels and Zurich, IF they work out the gate problem in Philly. They have filed for Athens already. They hope to have the gate problem resolved in the next two weeks so they can announce the service to the public. No gates no service Doug said, so it is up to the Philly Airport

The city of PHL needs to understand that TA traffic generates more revenue for US Airways and the Airport itself and not more frequencies from our friends at "Wal-Mart Airways".

This is all hingned on keeping Delta from entering the A concourse with domestic service. US Airways, needs this to be used for international expansion but the airport is trying to make space for Southwest growth and there lies the problem. Athens is slated for seasonal service and Brussels and Zurich could be year long...but still uncertain.

even if DL did move to A-East, couldn't US still use the hammerheads at the end of B and C for 757 and 767 departures if the 13 gates at A-West were full? They'll work it out. PHL needs the TA route presence much more than another SW flight to PIT, MDW or DAL.

Any idea on equipment? If they will use the ghetto 757's with 8 F Class seats, Southwest might as well operate the transatlantic service because you couldn't get me on one of those planes even if US was paying me to fly.

So US wants to tie up several gates for half a day for 3 flights (probably seasonal) overseas, whereas by accomodating Delta, LUV will hammer away with 8-10 flights/day to places that people actually go in large numbers.

PHL to US: use the stands and moon buggies of old or bring cash for new gates.

Well, it's certainly true that the additional TA flights would generate more revenue for US than additional WN flights would, but after that your logic falls apart.

Would 3 TA flights generate more PFC revenue for PHL than 8-10 WN flights a day on each of the equivalent gates?

Is there any reason that the international flights couldn't go out out different times, such as some at 6pm and others at 8pm? I realize that this could could cause a connection problem, but most connecting cities that would generate feed probably have frequent service to PHL.

Do 75s have the range to reach ATH? I also believe that Delta is currently the only US airline that flies there, isn't it?

We are to be upgrading some of our east 757's to ETOPS and adding winglets. Continental runs 757's all over the place. Even CLE to LGW I believe. Didn't NW just announce service with the 757 to europe from DTW the other day? While adding a European city to the list of PHL int'l destinations may have more prestige than say MDW or RDU it can't be argued that WN would generate more revenue and utilize the gate better than a flight to europe once a day and seasonal at that. It may come down to US getting a little creative with how they use the gates at PHL.

Think it was mentioned. 1 757 1 767 and 1 330 to service the new cities

Isn't the A330 too large for Athens route? It will be the only seasonal european link with A330 instead of B762 or B752.

So we should have for S'07 :

ATH (333)
AMS (752?)
BRU (752)
ARN (762)
MXP (762)
VCE (762)
BCN (752?)
LIS (752)
MAD (762?)
FCO (333)
FRA (333 and 762)
LGW (333)
MAN (333)
CDG (333)
DUB (752)
SNN (752)
GLA (752)
ZRH (762)
MUC (762)

I can tell you right now that neither the 767 or the 757-ER, have the range to do PHL-ATH. Not sure about the 333, but I've talked to Airbus pilots who've said west bound flights from Rome, during certain times of the year, is really stretching the range limitations of that aircraft. So what aircraft will they use to fly the ATH route and will it have to make a tech stop?

The 333 to ATH will fly weight restricted and is a better competitor to the refurbished DL 767-300ER out of JFK than the outdated interiors of the US 767-200ER. The whole idea is to beat CO to ATH - no matter what.
