Don't you mean the Mildew Hotel?? Where the rooms were so small you had to sleep with your suitcase?

That's the one! I could turn the shower on in the bathroom with my toes while still laying in my bed! Fortunately, I didn't spend much time in the room itself as I was out and about the majority of the layover in the city! Even though the accomodations were less than stellar, you do have to admit that the location was excellent!

If I were you, I would start with Hotwire.com or Priceline or hotels.com. The discounts the crew hotels offer in midtown are usually something like 10-25% off rack rate. But, when the rack rate in a "just north of dump status" hotel like the Roosevelt is $300/night, that ain't no bargain. I was looking for a trip to NYC myself, and found a hotel just east of Times Square for less than $100/night. Wasn't fancy. No room service, but I don't spend any time in a hotel room in NYC anyway. As long as the sheets and towels are clean, I don't even need them to be changed every day. I know how to hang up a towel after use.

I just went to Hotels.com, specified arrival date: 5/25, departure: 5/27, price under $150 near the Theater District. I quit looking when the results went over 250 hotels. Now, be aware when I say near the Theater District, I think nothing south of Macy's or North of Lincoln Center. In other words MIDTOWN. Hotels.com included a motel in Secaucus, NJ in the results. Now, in most cities I wouldn't think 13.4 miles from my target is all that far--certainly not here in Dallas. But, in metro NYC it might as well be across the continent.

The customer reviews on Hotels.com are pretty honest. They don't hold back a review just because it is negative. Or, a customer divulges info that the hotel would probably just as soon not be told. Like one review for a midtown hotel said that the room was hot as blue blazes, the a/c did not work, and the hotel made no attempt to fix it and refused to give the guest another room.

If I were you, I would start with Hotels.com, pick some likely candidates, and call them directly. I've had better luck talking directly with the hotel. Ask them (in these exact words), "What is your lowest rate?" Your next question then is "What is your best available rate?" (The lowest rate may be sold out.) If you have gotten a lower rate from a comparable property (based on reviews and the list of amenities), don't hesitate to say "Well, Dew Drop Inn offered me a lower rate than that." Depending on how badly they want your business, they may offer you a lower rate than Dew Drop Inn (they know if the other hotel is in a comparable category). Only then, would I say "by the way, I work for neverfly airways. Do you offer a discount to airline employees?"

Da Vinci Hotel

I stayed here in March. It was $99 a night and still is. Weekends are $112-$119 but require 3 night stay. Great location, clean rooms, continental breakfast in the morning and 2 computers in the lobby for use. Small place and typical NYC noise, but you can't beat this price!

Don't forget the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier museum four blocks up W 46th (if your feet get wet you went too far).

And of course Smith's Bar right across the street from the Milford. Great place to knock back a few and get away from the tourists.

Barrymore's on W. 45th St. at 8th Avenue is also a great spot for food and libations, and is also across the street from the Milford.

I also love dining at Angus McIndoes on W. 44th St between 8th Ave and Broadway. It is next door to the St. James Theater and right across the street from the Majestic Theater (Phantom of the Opera). It's pricey, but well worth it!! The cuisine I have found always incredibly good! I have also had several celebrity "sightings" in this particular restaurant that is popular with the cast and crews of Broadway.

Another thought would be in Weehawken NJ, just off the Lincoln tunnel. Not only to you get better rates you also get a fantabulous view of NYC because its on the hudson just south of the our now infamous 1549 ditching.

Great restaurants, hotel, water ferry to take you to Manhattan in minutes with (free) connecting buses to wherever you want to go.

Travelocity offers good rates there for a fraction of what Midtown would charge .... and for what? You get a "real" room in NJ!

NYC is a 24 hour town. The question that needs to be answered here is: Do the ferries and connecting buses run 24 hours? If not, don't stay in Weehawken. You may find yourself sitting in an all night diner waiting for the first ferry back to your hotel room.

It's a real pain to be on vacation, having a great time after the show sipping drinks in a nice pub with a great floor show, only to be burdened with keeping an eye on the clock so you don't miss the last ride to your hotel.

Relax. Enjoy. Stay in Manhattan.
