Delta Boston Break room Incident on January 9, 2009
On Friday January 9, 2009 at about 10AM, my coworker and I went over to visit our brothers at Delta, at their request because they asked us to keep them up to date on any information we had on the merger. We brought over various information. One was about the recent ruling by the National Mediation Board and another about the IAM pension plan. A secretary/manager came in and then left. I believe she went to get a supervisor. My coworker then left to get more information from his truck, IAM calendars, ect…While he was gone, a supervisor/performance lead came into the break room. He walked over to me and in an aggressive manner (he invaded my personal space and got into my face) and stuck his hand out and introduced himself to me. He told me I was going to have to leave and I asked him why. He stated, “I don’t like what you’re talking about and I don’t like what you’re doing.†I said, “Okay†and continued talking to the guys about the 113% funded IAM pension plan with no SS offset. You have to remember the Delta workers asked us to come over with any information pertaining to this merger and we will continue to do this despite what happened on this day.
The Delta supervisor went around and retrieved leaflets and pamphlets from the men even going so far as talking one out of someone’s hands while they were reading it. At this point my coworker came into the room with the additional information. One of the Delta employees went to the supervisor and asked him to give the pamphlet back so he could finish reading it. He was reluctant to do so I relieved the supervisor of the paperwork he was holding. At that point, the Delta supervisor said that if we didn’t leave he was going to call the State police. I told him to go ahead because beside the bullying and intimidation tactics what he had done was against the law and a violation of their rights. We stayed a little over 5 minutes for the police to come when it dawned on us that the Delta employees would most likely face disciplinary actions for having the audacity to challenge the supervisor for wanting to read the material, so we left.
The bottom line is the supervisor came over to throw us out and throw out the IAM pension information. He wasn’t successful with either, in fact he looked silly saying he was going to call the police and in retrospect he doesn’t have the authority to call the police without asking someone above him, you know, the whole robot thing. Whether he likes it or not it is the right of every person at Delta to be informed. And as everyone knows knowledge is power. Once again I want to state that the Delta employees want us to come to the break room. You have to remember folks, in less than 60 days;,we will be sharing this very break room with these men and women. It might not seem like much especially to us old NWA workers but these Delta guys showed a lot of guts by standing up to this supervisor by having the audacity of wanting something back that he took right from their hands. We didn’t use any names on this article because this is part of a complaint being sent to National Labor Relations Board. If anyone doubts any of this simply contact the Boston Delta break room and ask to speak with a ramp worker, not a supervisor or a performance lead, and I am sure they will back this up. In closing all one would ask is to inform yourself of our contract and all the benefits we won through the collecting bargaining process.
