These came across my YouTube feed, figured I'd pay tribute to the Red Tail and know Kev may enjoy seeing these:

I'm looking for the cool time lapse video of the DTW McNamara Terminal, if anyone comes across and wants to share a link I would appreciate it.

Very nice Josh, but we are not allowed to remember the old days, it gets our teachers panties in a wad...

There is One thing about those videos that needs to be pointed out and not forgotten.

Every mechanic you see in those is a scab.

What a shame that you think any teacher would not want anyone to go back and celebrate their heritage and the roots that helped make them what they are.

Yet, we don't always get to show our roots off to everyone that we encounter... sometimes we have to reconnect with family apart from the maddening crowd and then go back to the rest of the world with greater certainty.

Pay close attention to each of the employees' words in video 2 and listen to what they are asking for and then in all honesty whether those things have come to pass for those employees, regardless of whose name is on the pay check.

Pay the closest attention to the female voice that starts at 2.04 of the 2nd video.

Sure, DL is not NW and never claimed it would be. But the DL of today is very much built upon the strengths that NW brought to the merger - just as the merger with Western permanently changed DL particularly in that part of the world.

I regularly fly thru DTW and MSP as well as with former NW employees who have spread out across the new DL system.
I would dare say that the vast majority of employees I meet - regardless of where they started - have given change a chance and believe it is working and are working together not only well with each other but also with mgmt., virtues that employees there said was an important part of succeeding in the New Way Ahead from a perspective of time that is now more than 3 times longer since the merger than NW's emergence was until the DL merger was executed.

DL is the great airline it is because of ALL of the people that have helped make it and I deny none of them the respect that is who they are or that they brought to DL.

Don't hesitate to celebrate your past and your accomplishments, regardless of the era of life they occurred in.

Those who are married don't forget or celebrate their nuclear family just because they now have in-laws. But they also recognize that year after year, their identity as a couple is more and more defined by what they have built together than what they brought to the marriage.

And you said:

DL doesn't do heritage liveries.
DL is a forward looking company

Never saw it written in a manual but my theory is that DL is forward looking and doesn't heritage liveries precisely because it doesn't want to celebrate the heritage of the carriers that have formed DL.

When I say they are forward looking, it means they look at what DL is today and where they will go.

You are free to debate but I think it is precisely because DL doesn't want to celebrate the heritage of the airlines that have made up DL so DL doesn't celebrate its own heritage except in a museum which has next to no influence on the vast majority of customers or employees.

YMMV

.. which is why I don't think it has to do with keeping the brand simple or preserving it.

It, in my honest opinion, means not paying excessive tribute to DL's past because in reality, DL's past includes mergers with a whole lot of other Airlines.

That history has value to DL employees and for aviation fans, but probably doesn't have a place alongside DL's current brand and all DL has built.

Let's be honest and remember that DL's brand past also includes names like Song and Delta Express that DL isn't interested in bringing back to life.

and that is true... because heritage planes are a PUBLIC acknowledgement of the history that has formed DL. With very rare exceptions, DL has not painted its planes in its own outdated color schemes.

It is no more discriminatory for DL to not include other carriers' heritage schemes as long as DL doesn't include its own.

that doesn't mean that DL people among themselves - and the subgroups within DL - can't celebrate their own heritages.

but when DL puts its face toward the public, it shows the DL today - not the one from 20, 30, or 40 years ago - regardless of the pay check that the employees who now work for DL received at the time.

sorry, Kev, but others took it from being just a pleasant look back to the past before I joined the discussion.

and there is nothing, 700, in what I have said that is different from what I have said in the past.

You do realize that the DL of today is indeed formed from the DL of the past which was considerably different from today?

In recent weeks I have encountered several outstanding, energetic DL employees who have been hired since the merger and only have their roots in the DL they know today.

Given that DL continues to grow and hire and people from Delta and other carriers that joined DL thru merger retire, there is less and less focus on the past and more and more focus on building a solid future together.

No one is taking the past away - but it becomes less a part of one's life just as people in their 30s and 40s spend a whole lot less time thinking about their high school and elementary years than they did in the decade before.

from a pilot forum quoting a former NW employee.... he doesn't care what name is on the check as long as it doesn't bounce

For a whole lot of employees of any company, that's as far as their interest in their employer or their affairs or what happens at work goes.

This is the one I was thinking of:

Those are pilots.
They eat their young and throw everyone else under the bus to kill the golden goose.
F them and their opinions.

wow. just wow.

so you are going to say that pilots engage in behavior that other unions don't?

we could spend pages arguing that point but I'm going let Kev relish in the videos which Josh provides... there are other discussions for that.

Josh,
NW built one of the most photogenic passenger terminals in the world at DTW and it continues to reap the rewards and accolades it deserves. And it is staffed by some of the best people in the business.

Smart, very smart.
