I guess it depends on how you are defining success.


My mother was in Berlin about 10 years ago. She fell and broke her elbow. Due to her age the damage was quite severe. She required surgery and had 6 screws along with two plates. She was in the hospital for 11 days, had IV antibiotics, PT and a semi private room. The bill was under $5k. Insurance company did not even blink.


Yes German taxes are higher, but they have a higher standard of living in my opinion. They have excellent health care. Everyone is covered and the costs are minimal. I do not believe our system works. Theirs is by no means perfect but if I had a choice to be sick in Germany or the US, I'd pick Germany, especially if I did not have insurance.


A colleague of my wife went to MX to have dental veneers put on. Cost was $4k. He even goes and buys his meds across the border.


I do not have an issue with individuals making a buck but I think there is a problem when a business turns healthcare into a for profit business. They have a motive to make a profit at my expense.
