October Surprise? Meh.

Where did I ever mention Ann Romney's statement?... Putting words in other people's mouths again?

My comment was directed at the insinuation that being in France vs. Africa was a choice Romney got to make for the comfort/risk factor. It's not anyone's choice where they serve.

They're certainly a rare find. But Powell isn't a Democrat. He still considers himself a Republican. And I doubt he'd have hesitated to send in air cover for Stevens.

A coward, eh? There was nothing going on that would have deterred me. We'd only pulled out of Vietnam a few years earlier, and the military had been subsequently decimated by Carter.

Working at a gas station or a busboy was seen as more honorable at the time than enlisting in the military. It had nothing to do with fear, though.

What's your excuse?

Where do you think this whole argument started? Start at 6:00

Who said anything about Africa. You think Mr Romneys donations to the church had nothing to do with his sons choice assignment for missionary work? OK. I bet GW's dad had nothing to do with GW serving in the NG protecting the continental US from invasion. That may be the case but I have my doubts.

Rare find? What are the exact numbers? What Mr. Powell may or may not have done is up for debate. I suspect you are probably correct in your assumption but that does not make it right. There may have been other factors to take into account. MacArthur wanted to use nukes in North Korea. Probably a good thing he was not in charge.

OH, so your decision to not enlist was our of vanity? How quaint. If you believe in the war put up or shut up. Don't make others do your biding.

I do not agree with the US application of the military. The last 'just' war was WWII. I am not going to fight as a proxy for the like of politicians or chicken hawks like your self and Romney who are to cowardly to fight the wars they support.

'Tree / 'Dog
First off, I'll RESPECT your wishes, and never use the "R" word again. PROMISE !!!!!!!!!!!

As for ...KERO-SCHNAUZER, this F'n CLOWN doesn't know the First G-D thing about me !

Lets see,......ABRASIVE @ times.., ARROGANT, INSULTING @ times,...BRUTALLY H O N E S T, Yup thats me.

Now as for southwindBAG, ...well ...'I REST my CASE' !!!!!!!!!!

Not knowing the first thing about people never stopped you from trash talking anybody from the south.

I based my observations on your posts. Generally speaking you cannot go two posts without cursing or using broad stereotypes to describe other posters on this board or people from other parts of the country. Normally in a face to face situation that denotes the speaker is someone of lower intelligence who sees the world in a stereotypical fashion and has trouble forming his own conclusions when faced with new situations.

So I based my opinion of you from your own words as seen on this board. It is possible that you are indeed different in person than you are on the internet , since a great many people who are too timid to speak their mind or be very assertive in real life tend to puff up their chest in the faceless cyber world. Then again you may be exactly as you appear on this board, and in that case i stand by my original assessment.

You really are dense at times. Go read starting on Page 1. You're the first one to mention Whoopi and Anne Romney. Meanwhile, there's been all kids of other discussion that's just slamming the concept of Romney serving as a missionary at a time when the military was giving exemptions for just about everything. The exemption for missionary work has been around long before Vietnam.

You think Mr Romneys donations to the church had nothing to do with his sons choice assignment for missionary work? OK. I bet GW's dad had nothing to do with GW serving in the NG protecting the continental US from invasion.

Forgive me if I laugh at the idea of an avowed athiest from Texas claiming to be the end-all subject matter expert on how the LDS assigns its missionaries. Can you even name the location of your nearest LDS temple or ward building without Googling it?

I find all the hoopla over the draft a bit overblown. At the time, only about 10% of all 19-26 year old men were drafted. That means that either the other 90% had deferments, enlisted voluntarily, or their number simply wasn't called up.

The last statistics I've seen say 35-40% of the military was draftees, and the rest were volunteers. Comes out to about 3M in total. Maybe 6M if you figure that about half the volunteers enlisted to avoid the Army. It's still a relatively small number.

Just under 27 million American men were eligible for military service between 1964 and 1973.

Of that number 8.4 million served in active duty.

Another 2 million served in the National Guard or military reserves.

About 15.4 million got deferments, most for education, a smaller number for physical, mental or family hardships.

2.1 million actually saw service in Vietnam.

570,000 illegally resisted the draft.

58,152 were killed; 153,303 were seriously wounded

Hmm, Southwind gets called out for being a tranny.

Hmmm, who would do such a thing? Libtard? Barrack? Racist?

Hmmmm, only someone with Hmmmmm, wealth envy, that's the ticket. Its wealth envy that makes Southwind a tranny.

Wow ! 3 whole sentences !
Must have really riled you up this time.............can't really make any sense out of your ramblings and trying to make some kind of connection to the term "Shuck and Jive" to transvestites, but then again , your the one living in your world ! Thank God the rest of us don't !

We were talking about equivalents. Ann implied that Mit's service was equivalent to service in the military. We are talking about his cowardice in supporting a war but not fighting in it. I don't care that they were giving exemptions. He talked the talk but could not walk the walk.

Never been top space, flew a plane raced a car, been to the poles as well so what's your point? Can't make a comment on things I have not experienced first hand? You are doing that in every post about Libya. You have never been POTUS, have not received briefings or anything else but you are spouting off about that. The Mormon corporation is like any other corporation. They run on money and if you think there was no chance that Romneys money had an influence on his placement your are delusional. So pardon me if I do not take the partisan ramblings of a believer in religious fantasy. Do you even know where the closest Atheist group is to you with out looking it up in Google?

BTW, I lived 1 mile from the Mormon church in West LA and went to Emmerson high school right behind it.

I bet you do find all the hoop la over blown. Did you feel that way regarding Clinton? I'm betting not. I think it is more a if my guy does it's OK, if your guy does it, no dice. Bottom line is he supported a war he was to frighten and special to fight in. FAIL!

Being a staunch Constitutional supporter you see where this is going?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Can you yell fire in a crowded movie theater?

Can you use profanity on regular TV?

Freedom of Speech only applies to the government restricting your speech, and there are boundaries with that anyhow.

OK,...back to topic..."October surprise" .

Welcome Sandy. Come in and stick around for a WHILE ! heh, heh, heh : )

I don't fault you for not knowing how the Mormons do things, but missionaries don't chose where they're sent.
They show up at the training center in Ogden, UT, and are assigned a partner and their destination.

A month later, after a crash course in the local language, they're on the ground, sometimes with a bike if they're lucky, otherwise they're given a bus pass or they walk...

They never leave their partner's side except to use the bathroom/shower, and they don't get to go home. They don't have money. They don't get to go out on a date. They don't get a week off. Two years of that, and then they come home. Someone dies or gets sick at home? Too bad. They get to make a phone call, but typically don't go home for the funeral unless they quit their mission.

Mock the Mormons all you want if you want to, but you might want to try to be a little more informed before making blanket assumptions about what is involved.

You can try and spin it all you want. It does not change the fact that Mitt Romney protested in favor of a war he believed in so much he got himself a misisonary deferment and went to France. If the roles were reversed you would be screaming from the rooftops on what a coward Obama was for protesting in favor of a war he recieved a deferemnt so he did not have to actually fight in it.

And one last thing, who had it tougher. The draftee sitting in a foxhole in Vietnam. Or Mitt Romney peddling around the French countryside trying to sell Mormonism to a bunch of wine chuggers? Should be an easy question to answer.

I was mocking Mitt Romney, not Mormanism. Don't confuse the two.

You want to know why I'm talking about Libya? Here's my son's job description. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/usmc/mcsfbn.htm

So only people with a child in the military or someone who has/is serving can comment on military affairs? Just trying to get the rules straight. Are we making exemptions for elected officials? I guess we will have to since none of the current WH hopefuls have served. Do these same rules apply for all other fields as well?

So exactly how does his being in this unit equip/qualify you to make comments on military affairs. Anything that he knows which is classified and cannot be shared with you. All you know is what you are reading in the various news source just like, dare I say it, me.

Shall I give you a hint of where you can stick your arrogant self riotous opinions or can you figure it out on your own?

I pay taxes, I have friends who serve in various branches of the service. So I am going to keep on speaking my mine just as you are entitled to do.

As a side note, I dated a Mormon for a few years. When she started to get more heavily involved in the church I was forced aside. I did not fit in to their plan for her. OH well. I have had my fill of Mormons thank you very much.

Back to the ignore list you go, Tree. I'm shocked that someone would put you aside. Simply shocked.
