It's not just in that post. Look over his entire range of posts. You and I have had our heated discussions on here from time to time. But the impression I get of bears in real life is that he is exactly the way he is on here. I doubt he has very much control of his life or what happens to him and that he has not done much with the time he has been granted by God, Fate, genetics, little green men, or whatever someones chosen belief is.

Are you freaking kidding me? Mitt Romney did missionary work in France. Not the Congo where he could catch ebola, cholera, malaria or get his head choped off by an irate local, FRANCE!

I don't fault you for not knowing how the Mormons do things, but missionaries don't chose where they're sent.
They show up at the training center in Ogden, UT, and are assigned a partner and their destination.

A month later, after a crash course in the local language, they're on the ground, sometimes with a bike if they're lucky, otherwise they're given a bus pass or they walk...

They never leave their partner's side except to use the bathroom/shower, and they don't get to go home. They don't have money. They don't get to go out on a date. They don't get a week off. Two years of that, and then they come home. Someone dies or gets sick at home? Too bad. They get to make a phone call, but typically don't go home for the funeral unless they quit their mission.

Mock the Mormons all you want if you want to, but you might want to try to be a little more informed before making blanket assumptions about what is involved.

You are one strange bird. I cannot tell if you are being purposefully obtuse given your seemingly well reasoned responses on the airline site or if you are just playing devils advocate here and pressing people buttons or if you really are this ignorant.

Ms Romney gave this response in connection with a question about Mr Romney serving a mission instead of going to fight in Viet Nam. She said that people can serve in different ways which would seem to lead one to believe that she sees the two forms of service as being equal in some way. One person serving in the manner you described above and another serving in Viet Nam for 12-18 months, getting shot at, loosing friends, living in the jungle (did I mention the getting shot at part already?) coming home to ticker tape parades (OH wait that never happened).

I am not even Mormon and do not believe in God and I would pick the mission over Viet Nam with out even thinking about it. For you to come on here and try to portray mission work in France (or any where else for that matter) with service in the military (combat or peace time) is utterly insane and insulting to anyone who did serve.

As I recall you never put on a uniform. 777 and a few other here have. Perhaps you should talk to them about their experience before you try and make missionary work to be so traumatizing.

I think Bear likes to push people buttons and tends to get some what carried away in the heat of the moment. Look at some of the post from South, Dell, 3B, Knot et al and tell me what you see.

I never said being a missionary was harder. Some people seem to think it was a two year vacation at the destination of his choice. It's not.

And you're right that I didn't serve, nor have I ever pretended otherwise. I was a Democrat back then. By the time I recovered, I was already beyond the age of being able to volunteer.
