OK, Let's say NW goes on strike. What if any effect do you think it will have on AA's operations?
I would think NR to NRT and parts of Europe will be out of the question. I also expect an uptick at DFW and ORD. If it last too long AA might think about beefing up STL to handle the Mid -west traffic.

Win or Lose this battle, at least one union finally stood up and said enough is enough in the infamous race to the bottom.

Er,uh, I wonder why they dont have a without further ratification industry leading concession?

In about 2 hours all those mechanics are going to be unemployed. Which is better a 17.5% pay cut or being on the street?

(edited), they will never get it. Unions are a thing of the past, especially in the airline industry. I'm sorry, there was a time (early 1900's) and a place for unions, but it's all over now.

I sincerely beleive NW is pushing for a strike to break the union. Once they strike its automatic BK. They then pay-off the the same judge as UA did. Throw out the pensions, erase any contracts, outsource jobs to Chile (remember SHAFTA err.. CAFTA) lower the wages and bingo lots of mngt bonus money. Instant LCC.
We'll see in about 1.5 hrs.

There are two objectives here. To break the union, with the attendant wage savings, and to get on the bankruptcy gravy train before Oct 17, when things tighten up a little.

There is absolutely no question that NW is pushing for a strike. I'm not convinced though they want bankruptcy. If bankruptcy was the next move, why not just declare ch. 11 and use the judge? I think they're making an example of the mechanics and assuming that everyone else will fall in to line.

HA! HA! HA! HA! That's funny! I got news for you Oneflyer there is no such thing as an unemployed mechanic. There are other mechanical professions where these NWA mechanics are needed and wanted. Their replacements(the scabs) are the bottom of the barrel lowlifes who don't know how to even tune up a lawnmower. The NWA mechs have nothing to lose by going on strike and if it helps bring down one of the most mismanaged airlines ever, then more power to them!

Unions are needed more than ever. I remember the 1980's, when the argument went that you should get an education or learn a trade, these industrial jobs are a thing of the past. Now those jobs are gone and the skilled jobs are being hit. Income distribution is at its most warped level since the 1920's. I don't know anyone who isn't working two jobs. Please don't tell me that we have reached such a state of harmony in this country that workers don't need a voice.

The fact is that its not the idea of a union that is the problem. The problem is the people that run them and the management that they negeotiate with on the other side. Unions and management need to realize that to suceed they're going to have to be on the same time. And when I say union, I mean the workers, not union leadership.

Really, why don't you go ask all of those Delta mechanics that got laid off at DFW. They seem pretty unemployed, I'm sure they're real happy.

I remember talking about this scenario many years ago and how Amfa could not see into the future to see the language changed crippled Amfa's ability to negotiate in the future with NWA. Many of us predicted this would happen at NWA.

No Matter how you spin it the Industry has changed and just the shear volume of people willing to take a job as a scab shows us how much Amfa has destroyed our profession in conjunction Management.
