What's new

OMG! There was a go around today in CLT....

I’m not surprised at newz items like this. A couple of weeks ago I read this on ABCNews.com:

Last Saturday, a Continental flight skidded off the runway and burst into flames before taking off from Stapleton International Airport in Denver. Thirty-eight passengers were hurt in the crash, including the captain, who remains hospitalized.

It was a BOS based crew. "Go-Arounds" happen all the time not sure why this was news

In REAL news worth talking about
GO STEELERS!!! N'Nat

Soooo what are we going to do when it's a Pennsylvania Super Bowl??? I say GO STEELERS!! And I'm making a bet on it here. Someone start a new page for predictions--you know, a poll or something. But wait-=who is that team with the birds on the helmets??? Don't see anyone here singing the praises of Phoenix home team!!! GO STEELERS!!!

What's worse, is it made the local news last night too. Go figure. It was coming in from denver I guess, so I'd say....maybe someone from the paper or news station was on that flight and got their panties in a wad???

I don't think there is a pilot out there (airline or GA) that hasn't had to make a go around. Most of those were likely for another aircraft on the runway. Go arounds are for safety. They are to PREVENT making news, not to be news.

On to more imporant news... What's up with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie blowing off Ryan Seacrest? The Country is holding their breath waiting for an answer!

Oh, we're here, alright. You just don't know it yet. But the Eagles will learn this weekend......

BOOM.....that bird will be tattooed right in the middle of their chests. And it's song will be playin' in their ears......

And when they regain consciousness, the roar of the Arizona crowd will rock their world.

NFC Champs....it's in the bag.

Superbowl Champion......it's in the CARDS!!!

Folks I don't mean to be the bad guy but football belongs in the Water Cooler. Lets go back to topic or if we're done here we can close it.

This "incident" happended on the 11th, right?

So this morning, on the local INT TV news (WXII) - the channel that always hollers "Breaking News" and then runs a story about Cooter Brown's blue tick hound catching a chipmunk - the same thing is the lead story, complete with America West reference.

Accurate AND timely?

Must have been one hell of a go-around!

In all seriousness, how did these flights get mistaken for "America West?" Anyone got any ideas?

Cactus call sign?
ATC identifier?
Other?

I know nothing about that sort of stuff and am curious.

I've got visions of the web address that still shows www.usairways.com/awa

USAirways flights are identified within the FAA Air Traffic Control system with the designator "AWE." If this reporter received any official FAA reports on the flight, it would have been referred to as AWE 1522, or AWE 1525. That is likely where the reporter got the "America West" reference.

For over a decade, USAirways flights were desginated by "USA XXXX." Before that, the old Allegheny designator AAA was used. Back in the early 90's the company did lot of negotiating and maneuvering to get "US" or "USA" assigned to the flights. They did a three-way trade with the US Air Force and some other outfit to get it done. The boasted quite noisily about their "coup" when they finally got the "US," and later, "USA."

Then, in their wisdom, Tempe decided to go with the "Cactus" call sign last September. In their wisdom, they neglected to ask actual (not management) air traffic controllers what they thought about the change. Things were difficult on the frequencies for a few weeks while the controllers tried desperately to match "USA" on their screens with "Cactus" from their mouths. Finally, the fix was to abandon the hard won "USA" in favor of "AWE," since "AWE" always meant "Cactus" to the controllers.

With disuse, "USA" will likely be reassigned after a time period to some other company. Nice job, Ed.

THAT'S probably why the Charlotte Observer is still writing about America West flights doing go-arounds.

OK, but why write about a go around at all? It shouldn't be that big of a deal.
