I agree with you that most conflicts seem to have a religious aspect to them but just to play devils advocate, depending on how one looks at something there could be a religious aspect to almost anything.

Just because god spoke to Bush does not necessarily mean the war was a religious one. Just because Hitler used god in some of his speeches does not necessarily make it a religious war. Then again, depending one ones POV it could. Those who do not want to see it will never see it.

I have always wondered if there was no religion, what we would use for and excuse to hate and judge. We tend to be a creative spices so I have no doubt we would find something.

And I am a catholic. Went to catholic schools. My father is a Eucharistic minister.

I also studied the crusades extensively in college. I went to a catholic university.

That said it amazes me on both the left and the right the number of seemingly intelligent people otherwise will degenerate into spewing forth "talking Points" from whichever side they think they're on.  IMO, the talking point mentality is often more of a danger then any one particular view on an issue.
 
While Ron Paul does a far better job of articulating my views, I came to them on my own long before I knew who he was. One of the things I like about this forum is the diversity of views. For the most part the discourse remains civil and we should self police ourselves to keep it that way.

Encyclopedia of War, published back in 2005. The authors documented 1,763 wars, and only 123 of those could be identified as having religion as the causal factor or motive. It's a three volume set, ~$250 at Amazon if your local library doesn't have it.

While religions have often fallen well short of this utopian vision, we must recognize that greed, unbalanced power, and causeless hatred - not religion - are the causes of most wars, and eliminating these should be our focus.

There are bad people in the Church. There are also those who will use religion as an excuse to commit acts of violence and leaders who would use it as an excuse to declare war. As Christians we need to denounce these things when they occur, but we don’t need to let ourselves be beaten with the “religion is the cause of most wars” argument, especially when it has no basis in historical fact.

Thank you E. I would like to read more about it. I think many of these wars are due to cultural differences as much as religious.
