POC DEPARTMENT GOING BYE-BYE?

John John ??

Has the CWA ever saved or created jobs at Usairway.. I know they are or were pretty strong in the Telecommunications Industry

but unless your an ATT or verizion person . don't see where they have helped the Aviation industry at all

Yes .... Several years ago the company wanted flight attendants to come up and lift tickets at the doorway. They wanted rampers to come up and pull jetways up. This would have eliminated many gate agents. The union (mostly AFA) refused.

Don't think the company has forgotten about it, especially with the new boarding pass scanners. By doing the above .... they could easily place one gate CSS at a customer service desk and and run an entire shift with one gate agent and a few reroute kiosks.

I believe that the FAA requires the minimum complement of FA's (1 per 50 passenger seats) to be on the aircraft during boarding.

Great idea!!! Especially with the reliability history or USAir kiosks!!!

Back in the good old days (formerly known as these trying times in which we live) depending on the scheduled meal service and/or flight length, an extra flight attendant would be added to the crew at American. For instance, on extremely short flights, such as DFW-AUS or DFW-SAT, or on flights with full meal service in coach there would be 4 flight attendants on an MD-80 (FAA min = 3). The 4th flight attendant would operate the EGR during boarding as he/she was not part of minimum crew. At AA we called it plucking (leftover from the days when you had to pull the agent copy from the multi-part boarding pass). On 767 transcon flights there were usually 2 extra f/as IIRC.

I imagine that US Airways did similar staffing. Extras (officially known as Variable Manning positions or VMs, but just called extras) went by the way after the cutbacks in service following 9/11.

Would never happen because the working crew from captain on down are also responsible for making sure that minimum crew is on board before boarding can begin. Fines can be (and have been) issued to the individual crew members as well as to the airline.

All fees that are collect at a mainline station has to be done by a CWA agent
All sky caps are CWA agents at mainline cities this was done because of scope
CWA had to go to the national mediation board to get USAirways to recognizes baggage call center and the dividend miles agents and customers assistance reprehensive (CAR)
Saving mainline jobs in the airline business has been challenging for all airline unions
CWA fought management at ever turn on outsourcing still holding onto three mainline flights a day at a station is CWA work. I would hate to see CWA go the way of other unions (IAM AFA ALPA IBT and allow union Express employees take mainline jobs

First part true, second part not. Skycaps are not all CWA, but if there are fee collections involved (curbside kiosk, etc), then a CWA agent must be present to collect the fees, not the skycap.

I've also noticed that there are a couple POC departments that are really coordinated and willing to work with the outstations and then there are some that just like to type "Rain and ATC today no holds reroute all conx" into every flight regardless of what the actual weather and flow shows.

Very true I should have said all sky caps that collect fees are CWA agents

Coming to your airport soon ..........

http://www.usatoday.com/money/biztravel/20...osks-usat_x.htm

The ATM-like devices, they add, have helped curb labor costs and speed passengers to the gate.

The era of mazelike check-in lines and ticket agents briskly typing away on behind-the-counter computer terminals is fading.

construction on the $1.1 billion project already has begun, planners are making late design changes to the ticketing hall to accommodate the emergence of the electronic kiosks.

Did you find a 2005 USA Today in a dumpster somewhere?

Sounds like coming to your airport four years ago.

IND 2008, last second re-designs, to replace ticket counters with kiosk rotundas ...... opened about a year ago.

It's a bit dated ..... but many are still unaware that it's coming to their airport. 😉

Not in our station the sky caps come in with the passengers money in hand,
interupt an agt to chkn "their" pax grab the tags and go back out to the curb.
Sometimes they just use the kiosk if pax is paying with cc. TheTkt ctr agts to stupid to
say no you are doing my job. In their mind they say sure go ahead I'm getting 19/hr
to read a book or just do nothing i don't care.
