Question Bob Owens

Are you serious???? A good leader is someone who looks out for the profession and the men and women who work in that profession. Wow, now there will be thousands of our people in the profession working out of their truck, making less wages with no benefits, etc. Right on, thats great for our profession. Oh by the way, a good leader also speaks in time of crisis, not hiding as we have not heard from Bob, who by the way has health insurance as his wife is a nurse. Did he look out for his members, I think not.
I don't understand you having a problem with Bob Owens. He has looked out for the profession. Do you not remember Eastern Airlines? They (Boreman) came back time and time again getting concessions and handing money to people who were destroying the airline (sound familiar?) until the unions said no and they filed chapter 7. The TWU has been responsible for the declining pay and benefits in the airline industry. TWU ushered in B scale and SRPs, not to mention paying for medical insurance when everyone else got it free until they filed. The TWU has led by giving away hard earned pay and benefits in order to keep dues coming in so they can pay secretaries $140K a year and live high on the hog while their members have to refinance their houses and cut their monthy budgets. If this is the leadership you want then you already have it. Bob Owens tells the truth and doesn't pull punches. Just watch how Jim Little "Fights like hell" to save your pay and benefits. He'll sell us out like he did in 2003. He sold us out with the last TA but we wouldn't buy it. Another poster here has used BOHICA in his posts and that is what we all need to do now that Whoreton is calling the shots. He has already used the "We're in this together" line. If that one sounds familiar Ourpay used it too. Will Whoreton and his cronies take a pay cut? Will they lose their retirement? You bet they won't. We are not in this together and there will be no sharing the pain just like before. We'll get the pain and they'll get the gain. This will not be Bob Owen's fault or mine or yours. It will be Ourpay and Whoreton and all the other pirates that occupy offices at HDQ.

Ok, Timco can handle 4 757's , one at a time. Who do you have in mind to handle the rest of the fleet?

Orale Holmes...I got your overhaul right here Chuy.

I disagree. The contract is still in force however the company will submit new terms for the CBA that are needed to make money. Looking at other airlines there are some pretty nasty consequences - pension plan changes (frozen or terminated), benefit cost increases, outsourcing, layoffs, station closures, etc... - and it will be hell. Bob said it would be okay and we can get a better deal so I am not worried.

Airframe overhaul is going to get pounded.
You may be right, but it would appear that the TWU will continue to apply it's policy of Industrial Unionism and everyone will be affected. No one knows exactly what will happen.

The 777s frequently fly to China, no? There are overhaul facilities in PVG, PEK, SIN, HKG and elsewhere.

The 738s? How about Aeroman in SAL, where WN and other US airlines have been sending 737s? Home of the $5/$2/hr mechanics and helpers.

The 763s and the remaining 757s? I'm certain that someone, somewhere, out of the 7 billion people on the planet, can spare some time to overhaul them.

The MD-80s? Won't be much need to overhaul them once they've been retired, which may happen relatively quickly.

No doubt that AA has been setting up outside contractors 'months' before this filing (super secret negotiations with vendors).
Don't be surprised at how fast this may move.
UA closed down INDY HMV maintenance base in "0" DAY without notice, everybody went on NP, except to clear hanger work.

Good Luck to ALL!

A leader should be someone who can understand the economic realities. Really, I could care less what the pay for the executives are, I would like to take care of my family. Demanding unreachable salary expectations in the midst of the worst economic cycle since the depression is not someone I can trust. We turned down the last contract, and what did it get us, oh yeah, about 9K less to spend when unemployed. There are always those people who can demand this and that, but the really clever leaders know their environment in which they are working. Well, instead of the $36 or so range with the last contract turned down, maybe we can expect something in the twenties. This situation was not caused only by the mechanics and related but the attitudes sure didn't work to our advantage.

I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree. I believe if we had taken the crappy offer last year, they still would have filed BK and then AA would be back for another "bite of the apple" now. They did not like the fact that we still had retirement medical. Bob pointed out that they could terminate that at any time as long as they put all the money into accounts for us to purchase medical insurance once retired. This was not acceptable to them even though it was their idea. Remember..... Prefunding was a concession from 1989. If you weren't here in 89 then you don't realize AA made more money than they ever had in 89 and TWU negotiated concessions! This is how it has been over the years. Peddle away our pay and benfits to get SRPs and other things to keep union dues coming in and claiming industry leading contracts. Bob is tired of it as are most of us that have been here. Unfortunately the scumbags in HDQ hold all the cards and can piss away any and all profit by adding "special items" to the tally sheet. My question is why did it take the BOD so long to get rid of Arpey? I think it was the plan all along to bleed away money until they could file BK and steal more from us.

Maybe you are correct that AA would have came back for another bite and Bk anyway. We will never know now.

But I do know that I would have had $16,000 plus more in my pocket and they now are going to get what they want anyway.

Any ideas on how I get the lost $16K lost back? Think about it a minute before you respond with emotion, because now we are dealing with a factual filing that many chest thumpers like you said was a false threat. Well guess what? No Threat!

Those that keep making the same mistakes yet expecting different results are not what I like to follow.

You want me to detail for you what could have been done with $16,000.00 ?

Voting NO was a mistake, and now it has been proven.
There is no justification that can be made now.

As much as I disagree with Bob, I don't think he falls into the "I got mine" category.

The filing was not even six hours ago -- not everyone is able to jump online the hour that something happens.

If he's still AWOL by tonight, I'd be surprised.

Still waiting.

Speaking of the contract of 1989, which begat SRP's and prefunding, those things would NEVER had come to be, especially with AA making ALL that $$$$$$$$$$ during that time.......... First of all, the SRP contract was in the 1990's, around 1992. The only stations that I remember voting it down were JFK and AFW. Boston may or may not, it does not matter. Secondly, there are alot of your fair weather yankies at DFW and Tulsa that voted for it.

Well look at that, what am I EFHutton or something?

People, this is a "manufactured crisis". Meant to scare those who are easily scared.

So they filed a voluntary reorganization while they are sitting on $4 billion, let's see how extensively they plan on reorganizing. When they wipe out the frequent flyer miles, cancel their massive aircraft orders, see their revenue slip by a few billion and reissue new stock you may want to get a little worried. So far I haven't heard much. A 3 to 4% fleet reduction, employee attrition runs around 5%, so they won't have to hire as many next year. This ain't 2003 or 2005. There aren't thousands of unemployed airline workers out there and the airlines don't have to give seats away to fill airplanes either. With load factors as they are, and economic indicators, (black Friday sales, the stock market) doesn't look like the industry is headed towards a slump either.

Don't be scared, be mad.
