What's new

Rumor has it that the Flu hit Dallas hard this X'mas

The sick calls were happening in good times as well as now.

I wonder if anyone has figures on maint sick call usage before and since the concessions dropped them to half pay for the first two days. Any difference?

Do other depts have the same 1/2 pay thing, and were there any changes in the usage, before and after?

I guess I am wondering if the new program is saving the company money. It sure costs us, but I end up using more days for each occurance. But, maybe that is good, because every day I am out, I am getting better and not spreading the cold or flu virus to other employees.

Way back when we were paid yearly for not using sick days and were paid in full at retirement, I went years without using any, but often came in very sick, did little, and spread a lot of virus. Now that I am not so young, that would not be an option in any event. I only mention it as an example that incentives work. One supe even gave a man a paid day off if he had not called in sick during the previous 30 days. Boy, Oh Boy did he have low sick calls on his crew.

Only maintenance has the first 2 sick days at half pay. And, yes, people usually call in for a minimum of 3 days each occurrence. Although, not many of us are privy to the actual sick calls then vs. now, I can tell you at JFK, it was a rarity that anyone called in sick on a holiday!

And now, there is rarely sick calls for just one day!

Also, if you make it to retirement, AA will pay you $25.00 per unused sick day. The $25 was negotiated when we were making $25 per day!

what is the blue flu. I have been in Crew Sched for 8 years now and every year it is the same. It is a fact of life not the Blu Flu. We all know it is coming you cant stop it and flight attendants get nothing but re assigned for it.

Doesnt bother me at all. I just keep re assigning over and over again till it is time to go home. I could care less if 900 or 1800 flight attendants call in sick. They dont care so why should I. I gave up caring along time ago. See yall next holiday. I cant wait to start re assigning for new years. Bring it ON

$25 per day works out to $3.12 per hour. That would have been way in the early sixties. 5/1/66 was $3.75 per hour. Can't say exactly when it was, but we were making way over that when it went to $25 per day instead of full pay.

I suggest you read the post again. The sick calls have nothing to do with pay, nothing to do with management, noting to do with 9/11, nothing to do with 'pay back'. The sick calls were happening in good times as well as now. All it has to do with is people wanting to be off. You are trying to give the cause nobility where none exists.

BTW, when I reassign someone, I know enough not to reassign you anywhere near your base.

Thank goodness for cell phones/caller ID.
(For example)

Perhaps an Ill F/a,(who's finishing up her original trip)on 12/24, could call in, upon "landing" at base, Just BEFORE the a/c arrives at the gate, AND "Before" the A/C door is opened to reveal the "welcoming committee" of a member of management, with instuctions to call "YOU"

I'd imagine that our(hypothetical) F/A would be hard to CHASTISE, if she was sick call "free" for the previous 12 months.

operaations,

NOW "that's the ticket". Meaning, you have a MUCH more realistic approach, than GARFIELD(the movie).

Personally, if I were a F/A, I would NOT be upset with you, because you'd be doing your job.

Bottom line is, that a very crafty(cover your A$$ at all costs)F/A, WILL "prevail" !!

And as YOU have ALREADY said, AA can NOT stop it !!!!!!!!!

No hard feelings ! ........ It IS what it IS.

OH,
And for the "uncrafty" F/A ?? ........well, the faster they become "crafty", the happier they'll be !!!!

Heard an additional rumour of FA's that bought trips on HI-Board over the holiday, and then the FA's called in sick for the trips. So they got paid by the FA's who were selling the trips and by the company for their sick time. Apparantly an FA that sold his/her trip, got upset and said something to someone about it. The company is now supposedly looking at all the sick calls for traded trips, to see how many were paid by the company and by other FA's.

What does that have to do with anything?

People are calling in sick because they do not feel like working the holidays. Others who do show up must shoulder the burden. It has been shown that it is not a pay issue, not a contract issue, not an incentive issue. It’s selfishness and lack of a work ethic. Personally I believe the abusers should be terminated. Alas AA does not have the balls to do so and see it through. So be it. I work 8 hours just like Ops and if I reassign 1 or 1,000 it makes little difference to me. I do what I can, if it can’t be covered, flights get canceled. I have no control over that.

AA can't do anything about it. The flight attendants made the trade and the one dropping got rid of their trip. TT's are legal and contractual. Like I said, the compAAny can't stop TT's from happening or punish anyone who calls SK after picking one up.

Once the f/a who had $$ on the trip dropped it, their obligation was finished for that trip.

Watch out what you wish for! Over Christmas CS did RA tons of f/a's. I also know lots of them flat out said NO to the RA's. In fact one incident CS tried to RA 2 f/a's working LAX-JFK on 25DEC to DHD on Delta to SLC. Then work SLC-DFW-LGA. CS told the f/a's they had to go wait in the ticket counter line at DL in LAX for their tickets. The f/a's said NO and CS issued a MT to one of the f/a's. The other one received nothing. The NOD has already been filed and the MT will be removed. You can't issue one MT to a f/a and not the other. Once again CS screwed themselves.

Maybe CS should learn the "Value of Respect" and then you might see a little respect from us. What goes around comes around. We still have New Years 2006-2007 and Christmas/New Years 2007-2008 to go.

Respect has nothing to do with anything. Our job is to cover sequences with FA’s according to the contract. If someone chooses not to fulfill their contractual obligation that is their problem. Personally I would can them on the spot but I am a bit of a hard ass.

As for the TT issue, I think it is addressing the fact that (correct me if I am wrong) it is not allowed to pay someone to work for you.

F/A's are alowed to place money on their trips in HIBOARD. It is perfectly legal to do so. They're not paying someone to work for them, they're paying someone to pick it up. This way they don't have to fly. When the f/a picks it up for cash, they can do anything they want. Fly it, TT it or call in SK. It's up to them.

Nor Esta. chill out. the differencec between you and me is That I get it. And you dont. your work group as a whole can not send a message to management over the holidays by calling in sick or refusing an R/A. It has been going on since I got here in 98 and I can assume long before that.Still nothing has changed.

I get it there is also nothing management can do to make the flight attendant work group show up on the holidays. Holiday pay (didnt work) Incentives (didnt work) profit sharing (didnt work). It isnt about any of that. the people who call in sick just want to be with their families on the holidays. What bothers Garfield is that you all scream seniority. Well if you are senior enough you can have it off if not you have to work it. You bypass seniority by abusing sick time on the holidays.

It still bothers him. Me I could care less...I just R/A the poor soul that did show up for work..and yes if he says no like many do...I move on to the next...over and over and over and over...nothing you can do can stop it....nothing...

You also mention the Value of Respect....Please define that. what kind of respect are you looking for. What should crew schedule do different over the Holidays. Besides granting everyone a PVD on the 23,24,and 25....then the 29,30,31.....Tell me how would you do it differently

When I first started in the airline business as a young aviator on the mighty Jetstream 3201, a trusted friend and check airman for a major airline offered some sage wisdom. He said "you will spend the rest of your working life trying not to work, but still get paid for it."

Little did I know how true those words are. Profit share, pre-concession pay, holiday pay, whatever whatever pay/incentives will not reduce sick calls over the holiday. Crews (and every other employee group) have been calling in sick when they really weren't sick on Christmas since the beginning of time, and they always will.

Lunch is about 12:30, then off for a nice long walk........."In SHORTS + Tee Shirt" 🙄 🙄

Shorts and a tee shirt are acceptable where I work now, although I prefer a comfortable pair of well-worn jeans to go with my flip-flops. And, it's how I get to fly. None of that worrying about the dress-code nazi's at DFW...
