What's new

Rumor has it that the Flu hit Dallas hard this X'mas

You also mention the Value of Respect....Please define that. what kind of respect are you looking for. What should crew schedule do different over the Holidays. Besides granting everyone a PVD on the 23,24,and 25....then the 29,30,31.....Tell me how would you do it differently
They simply don't deserve it. Respect is earned not given. FA's have yet to respect there work, the customer and as sick calls go even their co-workers.

It so sickening to listen to them go on and on how no one respects them, when they cannot even respect each other. I don't see a time when they will. They will continue to wallow in the misery of their own making.

Wow, and this is from a flight attendant.

If you think all of us at soc are full of shite, here it is basically right from the horses mouth.

It is called the "do me" syndrome. F/as are notorious for wanting "someone" else to do the work. Look at their lack of contract knowledge. Their complete abdication of union rights and responsibilities is the making of labor relations dreams. How many will attend a base meeting much less run for office. If it doesn't benefit "me" then it must not have any value or importance. So what if another mother or father is reassigned and not with their family over the holiday. "I got mine, so pass the screwing on down". This is one you can't blame on Scheduling. If the f/as are not willing to grow up and accept responsibility for their own destiny, then they only have themselves to blame.

Are you sure you're not a FSM or in mAAnagement? You sound like it more and more with posts like that!

I dunno Garfield, seems you may be posting from work at times, that certainly is not ethical. But of course you have NEVER called in when you weren't sick.
As for Mike, I think he likes to get on his own soapbox from time to time, as he is practically perfect in every way. 😛

Nope. NEVER have. I looked at my sick time and over the last 2 years I have called in sick for 11 days. Most of it at one time when I had surgery earlier in 2006. I have been at work every Christmas and New Years Eve since I started with AA. The only time I call in sick is when I actually am sick.

We have access to the internet at work. There is no policy against viewing or posting on the internet from work. None of my posting interferes with my work. Work comes first. Always has and always will. That’s what I get paid for.

It's no less ethical than you reading magazines in the jumpseat instead of walking the aisles to see if customers need anything.

I flew on BA a couple weeks ago, and during the two hour flight, the flight attendants seemed to be in the aisle at all times, yet on my AA flight home that evening, I had to go into the F galley twice to ask for refills because the FA was too engrossed in a book...

Whaaaaat????!!! YOU ARE ADMITTING TO POSTING HERE ON COMPANY TIME???? My god kitty, that's fraud, waste, and abuse!!! That policy covers slacking off and stealing time from the company, you should know this. Looks like you should be doing more work if you have time to post here.

Simply stunning coming from a "CompAAny Man" like yourself. I'm shocked that you spend one minute not working at the AA grind stone, since you have accused those of use in a union of doing what we all know you do, and more than likely do it more often. 🙄

Gar, not disagreeing with you, but to put it in perspective...At Texaco, we had a policy much as you probably do over at Scheduling--i.e., if you are sick, please do not come to work and give it to your co-workers.

For a flight attendant,
In a rolling 12-month period...
0-1 occurrence - BASE LEVEL (makes no difference if it is one day or 6 days. It counts as 1 occurrence. 7 or more days counts as 2 occurrences.)
2 occurrences- COACHING and COUNSELING (Required meeting with supervisor regarding your apparently poor attendance. And, again makes no difference in length, 1-6 days.)
3 occurrences - FIRST WRITTEN WARNING. Mandatory meeting with your supervisor, followed by certified letter sent to your home warning you that you are in danger of termination.
4 occurrences - SECOND WRITTEN WARNING. Same thing only second time.
5 occurrences - Pre-Termination.
6 occurrences - Termination.

Now, there are ways to drop out of the cycle. For instance, if any of the occurrences was 4 or more days, you can use FMLA time and sick leave, and it doesn't count as an occurrence. (I'm not convinced that AMR's implementation of FMLA for flight attendants is legal, but none of us have the money to fight the company on it. And, lord knows the Blessed Order of the Perpetually-Trip Removed (APFA) doesn't care. They are trip-removed; so, it doesn't matter to them.)

Also, try to remember that we spend our days shut up in aluminum tubes with every sick person in North America. "No, I don't think running a fever of 103 and vomiting every 5 minutes is a reason to change my travel plans. Now, go get me another barf bag, stewardess."

I am at home sick right now, and going to the doctor this morning for the second time--major cold and blocked ears. I'm hoping he is willing to do the FMLA paperwork because I have missed 2 whole days in the past 12 months (unfortunately, 2 occurrences both involving oral surgery)--which were the first sick days I have used since 2001. If he isn't, I go to FIRST WRITTEN WARNING status.

Based on how your 11 days were grouped, you could already be terminated if you were a flight attendant. And, yes I know that there are flight attendants who abuse the system, but they are treated exactly the same way someone who is truly sick and doesn't abuse the system is treated.

The company is not willing to spend the money to go after the abusers. They just beat up on everyone as a result.

Jim, Besides saying AMEN to your post, remember if you are truly sick, just save your sicknotes. I have my Doctor write one up everytime I am out sick when I go see him. EVERY sick I have had for the past few years, I have Doctors notices for. The company uses fear and intimidation on us. Unfortunately it only works on those who are honest. There is no way they can fire you for being honestly sick.

From the employee handbook:The use of company time, material, or facilities for purposes not directly related to company business, or the removal or borrowing of company property without permission is prohibited
Also from the handbook: Violations of any of the American Airlines Rules of Conduct (listed above) or any of the policies in the American Airlines Standards of Business Conduct could be grounds for immediate termination depending on the severity of the incident or offense and the employee's record.

I would say there is most certainly a policy against use of the internet on company time and company computers for non company business.

That is good advice everyone should follow.

There is this one quote from the Bible that always stucks in my head. Its says “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone.â€￾

That was my point exactly. All of us are guilty in one way or the other.

Not me! Like Sir Gawain in the Idylls of the King, my strength is as the strength of ten because my heart is pure.

I do not see that as a valid comparison. On an aircraft, the passengers may have needs at any given time. At Crew skd, there are certain times when certain actions must occur such as make up, clearing the sick list, plotting of open time. Aside from that, calls come in at random times to the base. Aside from weather sessions, and holidays, most of the days are predictable with times when we are busy and times when we are slow. When we are slow, there is not much to do. Some people read, some play games (on line or board games) some surf the net. We are a captive audience. We cannot make work for our selves. The work is either there or it is not. Dispatch also does the same thing. Our work does not suffer. When I was there on the 31st, my browser was not even open for the 8 hours I was working.

Not sure how calling is sick when your not during the holidays is the same as me surfing the net when it’s slow can be compared but hey, it’s a free world.
