I see thast US has installed SAFEDOCK on gates B5 & 7 in CLT. Is this the first airport that US has tried this system?

It works okay, but I wonder if it provides any protection for someone inadvertently driving a ground vehicle too close behind a parking aircraft (with engines possibly above idle - single engine uphill ramp, etc.).

Are marshallers allowed to focus on anything besides the front wheel when they are parking?

Reminds me of the old Burroughs 'cylops' system once used around airports to park jets. It was a series of lights (much a drag strip starting lights) mounted high and in front of the plane would come on to inform the flight crew when it was close to the mark. I think after a few mistakes, as misidentifying the aircraft type and parking the wing into the jet bridge, using ramp agents became the norm again.

The SAFEDOCK appears to be a very expensive and overly complex piece of technology just to park a plane. Will it perform the duties of a FOD walk? Will in insure the fuel cart is in its proper location? Will it chalk the aircraft, thus allowing the jets to shut down and save fuel? Will it hook-up the ground power? The company boast about all the savings, but it still requires a ramp crew to be there and to do it! Better and cheaper solution would be to get the ramp crews to their assigned working areas 15 minutes before arrival, so to avoid delays.

Sorry, SAFEDOCK reminds me of Rube Goldberg idea of making of an extreme complex system to perform a simple task.

The system does have a limited ability to detect abnormalities in the approach to the gate area. In SEA they do have a ramper near the emergency stop button as well. So it's not like we come into the gate without someone watching the safety area.
