Finally, we can start research to see if cures can be found with stem cells.

As President Obama signed his own executive order lifting the federal funding restrictions on stem-cell research Monday, he referenced this fraught history, saying that his administration plans to "make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology." Of course, by now, the science may have changed - some experts now believe that adult stem cells also can be useful for medical therapies. But the important thing is that now, scientists will have the ability to make choices based on science.

Jesus Christ..........stem cell research has never been banned.WTF you been?

Key wording Gar.... Federal Funding Duh....its been going on for quite some time without the Fed paying for it...

Another question...if stem cell research is so promising..why isn't private investment paying for the research?

You don't realize it but you just blindly witnessed some type of political payback Dude.

saying that his administration plans to "make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology.

So this means you are going to be paying yang yang out the ass for carbon caps.....as GW isn't ideology but proven junk science.

Bend over and spread your little cheeks...............everything you hold dear just went up 45%.

And fat Al Gore is reaping the profits.

Hey Dell... I think there has been significant private funding of stem cell research. I believe when Congress attempted to overturn Bush's federal spending ban, there was $3.5 billion committed to stem cell research for the decade. Also, I believe states allocated money to the research as well.

Obama Signs Law Banning Federal Embryo Research
Two Days After Signing Executive Order to OK It

At a widely publicized White House ceremony on Monday, President Obama signed his own executive order lifting an executive order that President Bush had signed in 2001. While allowing federal funding of research involving embryonic stem cell lines that had already been created from embryos that had already been destroyed, Bush's 2001 order denied federal funding to research that required the killing of any additional embryos.

Then on Wednesday, only two days after he lifted President Bush’s executive order banning federal funding of stem cell research that requires the destruction of human embryos, President Barack Obama signed a law that explicilty bans federal funding of any "research in which a human embryo or embryos are destroyed, discarded, or knowingly subjected to risk of injury or death."

The order went on to say: “The Secretary of Health and Human Services (Secretary), through the Director of NIH, may support and conduct responsible, scientifically worthy human stem cell research, including human embryonic stem cell research, to the extent permitted by law.â€￾

Thanks to the Dickey-Wicker language in Section 509 of the omnibus bill, the "extent permitted by law" will continue to forbid federal funding of research that even puts embryos at risk.

Typical Obama talking out of both sides of his mouth.

You wanted him to strike down an entire bill due to one section? POTUS do not have line item veto so it's an all or nothing situation.

The article you posted makes it sound as if there is a process to getting Stem Cell going. First the EO, then get rid of the Dickey-Wicker law.

Rep. Mike Castle (R.-Del.), who co-sponsored Rep. DeGette’s bill, similarly stated this week that Dickey-Wicker should be revisited.
“This sets the stage for an attack on the Dickey-Wicker law, which since 1995 has been a provision of the annual appropriations bills for federal health programs,â€￾ said Johnson. “Any member of Congress who votes for legislation to repeal this law is voting to allow federal funding of human embryo farms, created through the use of human cloning.â€￾

A bill sponsored in the last Congress by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D.-Calif.) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R- Utah) would specifically permit federal funding of research using human embryos that are created by cloning and kept alive for no more than 14 days so that their stem cells can be extracted. Federal funding of this type of research is prohibited by Dickey-Wicker.

Obama did what he promised to do. Now it's up to Congress to take action.

Its written into the bill as law, no way around it.

Exactly.

Whilst Obama's "separate idealogy from science" remark was a good sound bite, he should apply the same logic to to card-check vs. secret-ballot union bill now working its way thru Congress.

Would employees be able to also de-certify a union via card-check if this bill passes?
