What's new

Sodas $3 Pillows and Blankets $5 apiece

Will crews get vouchers or something for their own consumption? There are a lot of pop-chuggers out there on the line.

Wait, this sounds like one of Freedom’s revenue generating ideas; no more free Cokes while you’re flying a trip!

Great, Another idea to further drive away customers.

I watched Mr Kirbys PHX video and he was explaining how customers will go to the airline with the cheapest price. Well, how about some ideas that will bring customers here and keep them here instead of driving them away.

Absolutely unbelievable....

wopr21
you guys need to chill. this will not drive away customers at all. people will fly . this something that has to be done inorder to survive. in the past. the employees made the sacrifice. now it's time for the customers to unfortunately pay the price. i have no problem with that. remember this will only be implemented i am sure on domestic economy only .you guys wanted to know what plan B was ? where here it is . find anyway to create revenue , get these contracts together , cut capacity, get this airline back on track.
thse are tough decisions that need to made. but if it means the survival of this airline. then so be it.it will make news for only a little bit but people will get use to it. if it doesen't work, then we try something else. but we just can't sit there and do nothing about the situation we are in. oh , and about charging nonrevs to fly.... absolutely, completely.NOT TRUE. it won't happen. the company knows they will have a revolt if this were done.

if sw was paying the same for fuel as the others. they would be adding fees themselves. so for now they can enjoy their hedging and put out ad campaigns such as these. it won't last though . they are smart though. taking great advantage of the situation.
I wonder if the only difference is "fuel hedging"?

so go fly wn.

Thanks for the sound tip and advice etops1.....I've actually been doing that for a good while now...which, I s'pose is why I understand the seat pitch and cleaner airplane thing...yadda, yadda, yadda.

One other thing I wonder if the geniuses in the clay pot are considering.....

Suppose I, as a CP (a status I actually do hold now, amazingly enough) book a last minute ticket...and pay some STUPID price from, oh, say PVD-CLT...because, as the Parker/Kirby team say, "timing and route structure mean everything." (Wait! I thought customers only cared about price? Or was it arriving on time....wait, can someone PLEASE tell me what I care about since I'm clearly an idiot and don't know???)

Anyway, I pay the $602 or which, airfare is $559.99 (according to www.usairways.bom)....that works out to $0.82 per mile based on a 683 mile trip...for coach...

And we all know, because of the smoke and mirrors game most airlines (except WN) play with pricing, there are people on that airplane that paid $199 (if that) to fly from PVD-TPA with a stop in CLT...

And they order a soda....and I order a soda....and my ticket....as a CP...gets me the chance to spend money (I don't care if it's $1.00 or $3.00) on a friggin can of Coke??? Say WHAT?

Absolutely, unequivocally, ridiculous....

Thanks for the sage advice etops1....you're right....I should go fly anyone other then US. Oh, and by the way.....when you fly enough for a free trip on WN, you get a drink book....and when you buy Biz Select on WN, you get a drink coupon...On US when you pay top dollar...you don't get even a bag of pretzels...and soon, that top dollar seat earns you the right to pay for a soda...

Am I the only one that sees this product and it's pricing has not been remotely well thought out????

This industry is quickly becoming a "no frills" business. All your ticket buys you is a seat and an oxygen mask. You want anything else, your gonna have to pay for it.

The gas prices is creeping in to 5.00 here in California, the airlines have to do something. I couldn't care less if the airlines if they start charging for everything. Times are changing and I'd rather have them charge passengers than take it out of our paychecks! If people want to fly WN, then let them. People still need to go from point A to point B and WN doesn't fly to every destination that we fly. Today, we start the No pretzel flight and I'm not going to miss giving those tidbits.

well said.

I think it is a crazy decision to charge for soda but as I have mentioned for quite some time Amtrak and Greyhound do NOT offer you anything besides a seat from A to B. Now competitors may not follow US in this decision but using CO as an example do other airlines suffer at their expense? CO still serves complimentary meals in coach while most other airlines stopped after 911. Does the public choose CO as a whole over other carriers? NO. Now with all of this being said this is a CRYSTAL CLEAR view of just how talented our management is. While generated revenue is generated revenue they will have to create some SERIOUS change to offset the price of fuel. Nickel and diming or "Ala Carte" as they like to use as much as "business casual" will NOT, NOT, NOT catapult you to profitability. It WILL turn people away when there is CHOICE. Though I don't want them to ask for anything from my pay, treating the traveling public as we do compared to other carriers could eventually HURT my pay. I mean whether they pay $89.00 or $890.00 it contributes to my check. NO?

Vantheman63,

You are right on the money.

I find it insulting that US (and some others) are charging full fare customers for extras. I though I paid enough already.

I have taken my $0.89 RASM and spending it on other airlines.

When NW first had BOB, you received a coupon for a free BOB at check in on a full Y. I don't know if that is still the case since I have not been in back for years.

My choice in flights were based on schedule and the largest plane on route. Now I am selecting flights on airlines that don't nickel and dime you.

I saw a SW commercial on TV last night where the f/a was making an announcement like "Ladies and Gentlemen, if you would like a drink it will be $3, a blanket will be $2, if you would like to ring the f/a call button, it will be $1" etc...you get the idea. Then it said that at SW they give you for free what other airlines are charging for. Then I saw another commericial from SW where people were boarding the airplane and they were having to insert money to open the OBH, to open the window shades, etc. and they said they won't nickel and dime you to death at SW like other airlines do. SW is laughing their butts off at the rest of us.
I have seen that commerical a few times yesterday and the day before I think its funny but true and a very good commerical

With the rising cost of gas, I think you'll have very limited choice. Almost all airlines are going to nickel and dime you.

You are right. But I still have a choice, and that is why CO got my business today rather than AA.

US AIRWAYS TO PUT JOB-JOHNIES AT ALL BOARDING GATES!

US Airways will install Portable toilets and each passenger must do the duty prior to boarding. If The passenger refuses, they will be denied boarding till the can get the extra weight off them. US Airways is looking into new ways to make their planes lighter to save on fuel consumption. Maybe this is why they are eliminating so many amenities and upsetting the business traveler. By upsetting the business traveler, US Airways predicts that they can travel lighter, by them not bringing their computers on and the extra business attire that they require. The portable toilets will allow for each passenger to travel 2 pounds lighter. 150 Passengers would save 300 pounds of extra weight that can not be deposed of till after landing.
