Sodas $3 Pillows and Blankets $5 apiece

I think it is a crazy decision to charge for soda but as I have mentioned for quite some time Amtrak and Greyhound do NOT offer you anything besides a seat from A to B. Now competitors may not follow US in this decision but using CO as an example do other airlines suffer at their expense?

Actually, American's regional carrier American Eagle started charging for sodas in 2005 and American has removed all pillows and blankets. Northwest charge 1.00 for a bag of tid-bits, Air Canada charge for pillows and blankets, United's Ted sells "sleep kits" for 10.00. US Airways is not the first one to do this, other airlines have done it. I don't know why you are getting so pissy about this. Would you rather take concessions and take it out of our paychecks? I don't think so!

continental also ownes their catering service "chelsea foods" which my supervisor went to work with. so they can do that.

Well that certainly makes more sense. After flawed attempts to merge and acquire this just seems a lame attempt at offsetting the cost of fuel. I know we must start somewhere but with our fuel costs being over 1billion annually this will not even come CLOSE to covering that cost with AAAAAAALL the other ideas they have of selling and charging. While others may follow with the nickel and diming this truly shows the talent at hand here. I'm sorry but they are grabbing at straws here.

You are totally correct Amtrak and Greyhound do not give free snacks or soda.

Also they don't charge you to bring a second suitcase, and rarely loose them.

So your comparison really doesn't hold water.

Singleflyer the train though doesn't get you there as fast as an airplane. It also doesn't take as much fuel to travel. Look I don't understand why airlines are held to a different standard. With that being said I agree that the train is much less hassle.

Singleflyer...Have you ever taken a trip with the fine establishment known as Greyhound? The only reason they rarely lose bags is because the passengers are required to transfer their own luggage at a connection. In the event of a missed connection or delays they will transfer your bags for you and almost everytime someone loses a bag, and you are s.o.l. if you didn't buy their extra handling insurance--which most passengers don't buy because they have move the bags themselves.

Oh yeah who wouldn't prefer a 4.5 hour flight coast to coast than to travel with 60 or so stangers that haven't bathed in 3 days?!

On one hand I don't understand that airlines are held to a different standard than other means of transportation regardless of what competition does. Competition doing it too doesn't answer the question as to WHY. I know that airlines are struggling to cover costs with fuel being so high but I just DON'T see the charging of $3.00 for a soda as the answer. I think it's a stretch to charge that much and could bet you won't see the competition doing it. Not that I want to see anyone lose their jobs but I think you'll have to see US make some drastic changes to keep ahead of the costs with fuel as high as it is. Charging people to death is NOT the answer.

I have to ask....WHERE is the talent here? Anyone? Failed takeover, a "no thanks" from UA...what now? Compete up and down the eastern seaboard against a GIANT DL after the merger and the likes of UA and AA in size? HOW in hell will we compete. Oh and throw in WN too. Better charge $10.00 for that soda then. 🙄

the past. the employees made the sacrifice. now it's time for the customers to unfortunately pay the price. i have no problem with that. remember this will only be implemented i am sure on domestic economy only.

etops1, here's where I agree with you 1,000%. We're in complete agreement.

I couldn't say this in the past..but now that my wife is completely out of US...I can. I understand the issues and the airline biz a little more then the average pax. I'm married to a (now retired) F/A that spent 2 months shy of 24 years with US. She's original PI and was based in DCA and then CLT the last 19 years. She took that last out that was offered when, I believe, 134 F/As took the out.

I watched her "enjoyment" and enthusiasm for the job go from "I love to fly and it shows" to, "I can't believe how much I hate this job now." I watched her pay go down....I know, I understand, I agree with what you are saying.

When this merger was announced, we were both TOTALLY stoked! We thought it was going to be great, open up a new life for her and her flying, new people, new places to go and the promise of a product that she could/would be proud of..."all the amenities of a ful service, hub and spoke carrier with the low fares of a low cost carrier."

It almost sounded too good to be true....wait....it was too good to be true.

We watched Doug Parker charm the bejeebies out of people at first...I watched his INT "performance" when he said, "if there is any group of pax we'll charge every fee to, it's the CP group." That was when I was, as a pax thinking, "uh oh."

From there, it went SCREAMINGLY down hill, fast.

I've beat the stories of flying in Envoy and F that was so bad my client's 15 year old daughter couldn't rest her arm on her armrest enough to kill 50 horses, so I'll save those.

HOWEVER....getting back on topic....however, while I agree that the employees have bore the brunt of this environment and I agree that the $99 transcon must go away, I'm telling you, the management team at this airline has done an AWFUL job of creating, producing and executing this product....and they've done and even worse job of understanding the customer. There ARE people that can afford and will pay for quality. CLEARLY, these people don't want them...fine....stop pretending and just go full bore into a failed, time and time again strategy...."price." (wait, is it "on time, with my luggage?" Or is it the schedule?)

That's my point in all this....the sparring back and forth on WN or CO isn't intended to piddle on the shoes of US folk...I'm actually one of you! The point is, SOMEONE, ANYONE, get to these people and tell them they are not thinking about this the right way....

WHY doesn't US have leverage to go fetch capital? Because they are fully immersed and sinking themselves further into "commodity-itis." That's why....there is no "US Airways Franchise" any more. We have, a huge-ass regional carrier operating semi-internationally now...

It's just not a well thought out product, that's my point. And along those lines, trying to woo travelers into a dirt cheap $99 (or $199) transcon....just doesn't make any sense to me....especially when someone, like me, is going to pay $1,000 for that same ticket...and pay for, what essentially becomes a $500 can of soda, subsidizing the $199 transcon people.

It makes has made and will continue to make ZERO sense to me.

And contrary to popular belief, no matter HOW stupid Doug Parker and Scott Kirby think people like me are, we are "trainable." We can be made to understand that it costs more.

Is there any way we could get our hands on literature besides Attache or Skymall for the pax to read? A few people magazines, sports illustrated, US weekly, Time? I bet pax would pay for reading material, $5 each.......or we could lend them noise canceling headsets for a fee......why just pillows and blankets? I cant tell you how many times I forgot reading material and had to read the IS Airways magazine the 8th time in a row....

Ok here is ANOTHER issue I have. How much are YOU as a flight attendant willing to sell before it's too much? I understand some find this the end all if we don't start selling everything. Do you want to be a sales person or a flight attendant? I'm fine with selling but on every single flight every single day? This is the same group they couldn't even get to push the Coldstone Creamery coupons. I am a flight attendant......NOT a sales associate. Will we get commission as Skybus did since they wanna go down that route?

Eagle performed a limited experiment on charging for soda. It didn't work and soda is still free on all AA and Eagle flights.

I doubt even US is stupid enough to try to charge $3 for a coke; that price probably refers to the hip new "energy" drinks that today's slackers are in love with. WN and AS both sell the latest expensive energy drinks for $3 IIRC.

Did you get your biscuits in a wad over that? Me so sorry. HEY, we could sell massages......

heh heh... just kidding, don't slap me.

Don't put it past them. Hell I can see being in Envoy rubbing feet over the Atlantic! ! ! ! EWWWWW

Its getting harder and harder to say that I enjoy working for this airline. I swear we are at the bottom of EVERYTHING!
