I live in the city, in a solid blue collar middle class neighborhood. We do have a farmers market close by that is available by public transit. The choices are not cheaper than the dollar menus within walking distance.

Same here.  No public tranasit (this is Texas after all) but they are close to me.  The cost of eating healthy always has been substantially more expensive than eating junk food.  Almost al the studies out there link econimoics and access to healthy food.  Heck, just look at the way grocery stores are laided out.

The IT people contracted to do work in my station are struggling.  Even the ones with talent and personality (both of which you are missing) are working on day-to-day assignments.  Don't be so sure you won't need welfare again.
