Target and Wal-Mart employee job action Black Friday

I do agree the TV ads Wal-Mart is airing to try boost their image are very misleading. But again Kev do you really believe it is viable to make these jobs higher paying jobs with cushy benefits like the unions/defacto UFCW groups have been pushing for?
Short answer: Yes

Longer answer: Depends on what your definition of "cushy" is.

why don't they attack Bed Bath Beyond, CVS, TJX (Marshalls/TJ Maxx) or Walgreens for paying similar low wages and not offering affordable health care benefits to most employees?
Because those firms are nowhere near the scale that Wal-Mart is?

Josh,
it's the same logic that because DL is the most profitable airline in the Americas, they should renovate their res office themselves.

Problem is that Kev can't define how big any company needs to be to have those requirements.

Also doesn't change that the logic completely falls apart if we start applying it to Kev, or any other middle-class family's personal finances.
At what point should Kev or any other family start paying more than the people next to them because Kev (presumably) manages his personal finances well and doesn't have loads of debt (presumably) like his neighbor.

Why should Kev be punished for being a good financial manager?

Why should Wal-Mart be punished for running a good operation by having to pay higher wages than smaller companies?

Who says anyone would need to pay more for the same goods? Investing in your people is just that; an investment. The profit margins aren't exactly razor thin over there- Wal Mart can afford it.

...And as an added bonus, some of that money paid out in wages might actually stay in the community (you know, all those small businesses the right loves to tout?) instead of being sucked to Bentonville every night...

If they are going to push for benefits packages organized public sector workers receive than it is cushy as far as I am concerned. Wal-Mart runs a lean operation and they pass the savings onto customers through lower prices than the competition. While I don't enjoy shopping at Wal-Mart nor is there one remotely close to me, I take advantage of their bargains whenever I can. Go shop for a basket of goods at your local CVS and do the same at Wal-Mart, the savings can be significant. What you also forget is Wal-Mart has a disproportionately strong presence in RTW states where popular opinion of organized labor is less than favorable, so even if this campaign is successful the unions aren't likely to see the financial windfall they are expecting of new dues payers.

So by your logic, because Chick Fil A is a smaller fastfood chain it should be more ok for their CEO to make openly anti-gay remarks and create a hostile environment for employees and customers, but it would be a bigger concern from a chain of greater scale? Sorry I don't follow you. Bed Bath Beyond, TJX, Walgreens are all watching this closely as there are serious implications for them and their labor relations. The media and labor groups have just given them a pass all this time, their labor practices, wages and benefit are very similar to Wal-Mart.

I haven't seen that direct comparison as a stated goal. Can you point to where someone claimed it is?

Um, no.

C'mon.

Do you realize the manager of the local walmart in my town gets a SIX figure bonus a year for meeting performance goals?

Great, thanks for proving that Wal-Mart is a decent employer. Does your local Marshalls or Target store do the same?

Explain. Why is it ok that simply because some retailers are smaller in scale their labor practices are acceptable but isn't for Wal-Mart? Even our IAM and CLT loving ex-stock clerk agrees Wal-Mart adequately compensates their employees, explain why it is ok for other retailers but no Wal-Mart. Double standard?

DO NOT put WORDS INTO MY POSTS.

NO where did I ever agree, stop lying again!

Don't shop Wal-Mart.  It is not that hard to do.  Go to the small local merchants Wal-mart wants to kill off.

Hardly unique to Wal-Mart.

What is an acceptable wage for stocking shelves and running a register?
An acceptable wage is whatever a company is willing to pay for the services you render !

Last time I checked, company's aren't in business to create jobs !
