PHL is THE backbone of LCC.
PHL has enormous O + D traffic. But how to structure PHL into the mix with JFK, if this deal goes down.
(which I think it will, and I hope it does) !

Hey, maybe the new American could run the International flights on an "Odd-Even" day schedule.
Ex. to (say) CDG or BRU................M-W-Su from PHL, then T-Th-Sa from JFK, with Both PHL and JFK on Friday.

Yes ?
No ?

I feel there is enough traffic to support both operations.

I want to say Us's PHL hub is in the 250-300 flight per day ball park. It would almost mean AA would have to buy Delta and jetBlue to get the slots to move the PHL hub to JFK. (Delta is at ~200-250 slots, B6 at ~150 AA at ~110)

AA will likely leave JFK alone, focusing on its core O/D markets while letting PHL (and to a point ORD/CLT) be its gateway to Europe.

(and before anyone says it. It doesn't matter if AA has 8 millions gates, the runway capacity is maxed out at JFK(and LGA/EWR) thus they have slots, much like LHR and NRT. JFK does has slots at off-peak time, but their is a reason why no one wants them) B)

Actually, PHL has a smaller proportion of O&D traffic than its population would suggest. It's got OK O&D but not "enormous" O&D. Kinda like Detroit. But unlike DTW, PHL is a lousy airport for connecting. CluebyFour recently posted well-written and thoughtful predictions in the US forum on what might happen to the US hubs.

My prediction for PHL is that, over time, it would more resemble BOS than its present size. Why? Because many of the passengers on the US PHL European flights are connecting from elsewhere - they aren't originating in PHL. If they're going to connect anyway, might as well connect at JFK. But like BOS, PHL would retain some European/London flights if there are flights that are attracting high fares from PHL to Europe.

About BOS: US still has some presence there and I suspect that AA might grow some at BOS if combined with US.

I would bet serious money against that solutiion.

From a terminal standpoint in BOS, AA + US Totally control a Great set-up in terminal - B (not counting a few LCC outsourced ramp operations, Alaska, Spirit)

FWAAA, If you're PHL/O+D #'s are correct, and I don't doubt them, then I too can see Philly going "that way" .

Terminal B in Boston is horrible...you can't even get from one section of B to the other without going outside (and by outside, I mean not only exiting security, but actually going OUTSIDE the building to walk to the other section. Horrible design).

On the earnings conference call today, Parker or Kirby said that CLT and DCA were the best financially performing hubs (if you want to count DCA as a hub), followed by PHL and PHX which are about the equal. For PHL/PHX, PHL has better O&D yield but PHX has an O&D and cost advantage - my thought, not what was said.

If there were a merger I suspect it's wouldn't be a big problem connecting the 2 parts of BOS' B terminal inside security. It's be a fairly small project as airport projects go.

Correct Jim.

Yes, presently there is no post security connection from one side to the other.

As for "going outside", it's IMPOSSIBLE to get wet as the walk, (all 30 seconds of it) involves crossing thru the parking lot in well lighted, safe crossing points. I know, as I use to walk over to US for lunch from the AA side, back in the day, when I was "AA Fleet service clerk Extraodinaire" (SP?) 😛

And I used to do it in the opposite direction before the US portion got the food court...at that time there was only one place to eat on the US side.

And I used to do it in the opposite direction, but that was in the olden days when crews could bypass security. Then there was only one restaurant in the US side right beside the main security checkpoint.
