GlennTilton, just very recently, spoke to a trade group(perhaps in Chicago), and reiterated that consolidations are coming.

I'm not a big Tilton fan, however, he WAS brought in, to guide UAL through BK(which he did), and then consolidate.

As a huge fan of consolidation, I just wish he would get "step 2" completed !!!!!!

My .02 cent's worth/opinion, is that UAL will be the survivor, no matter what the deal is, and WHENEVER the deal is.

Geez Glenn...."$hit, or get of the pot, will ya"

There has never been an inevitable time or form for this to occur. The only certainty that we aimed for here was that we would be financially able to participate from a position of strength.

I look forward to the release of the 3rd quarter numbers and a close look at how UAL stacks up against it's competitors.

I am hopeful that we will show a more competitive non-labor cost structure and will have added to the cash balance once again.

Looking forward to it.

In today's news:

CHICAGO (AP) -- There's likely to be more consolidation in the U.S. airline industry, just as there has been in the oil and telecom sectors, the chief executive of UAL Corp. said Thursday.
Following three years of "hard work" with financial restructuring in bankruptcy, UAL, parent of United Airlines, now is on solid footing to participate in the merger and acquisition market, CEO Glenn Tilton told reporters at the Executives' Club of Chicago.

Tilton, who is also president and chairman of the company, didn't speculate on which airlines might come into play, but said that United would consider ways to enhance value for its shareholders if an opportunity arose.

Down the road, Tilton said, U.S. airlines may become financial partners with airports. Citing Lufthansa AG's investment in the companies that operate airports in Germany, Tilton said that "Europe is ahead of us" in putting ground and air businesses together in the industry.

Since it emerged from bankruptcy in February, United has enjoyed healthy industry trends, including strong air passenger traffic, and recently, lower fuel prices. The price of jet fuel has fallen 20 percent in the past month, boding well for airline earnings.

Tilton, an oil company executive for 30 years prior to joining United three years ago, said oil prices reached unprecedented heights in the past year due to political insecurity rather than the fundamentals of supply and demand.

"If there's one thing I've learned in the oil business, it's that high prices beget low prices," Tilton said. Oil producers have been spurred to action with new plans for oil production from the Gulf of Mexico and Canada. That will add oil supply, and make the U.S. less dependent on foreign sources, Tilton said.

UAL shares closed down 84 cents, or 2.9 percent, to $27.91 Thursday on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The company is based in Elk Grove Village, Ill.

WT,

You keep up THAT kind of talk, and I'll have "Penquin Power" UNLEASHED on you ! (DO you catch my drift) ??

For some unexplainable reason, I find a significant portion of what you say, credible(at times).

However, make NO mistake about the seriousness of Glenn Tiltons efforts to "marry" UAL with some other airline !!

And when It's official, UAL WILL "lay on Top" 🙄

Perhaps, ....... it might be DL, who has to shop for the "K Y"

My God, what's next? Is he going to shop UA on EBay? It's obvious that he is desperate to involve UA in some form of consolidation so he can get his grand payoff and ride off into the sunset. The man has no desire to run UA for the long haul. The only reason he was brought in was to manage the bankruptcy process. The quicker he goes, the better.

United Airlines explores its strategic options - Goldman Sachs to scout mergers, other options

"People close to United expect Goldman to help the airline assess the value of its domestic and international holdings, advise it on sales or purchases of domestic or international routes and scout for mergers."

"Though United emerged from bankruptcy financially stronger, it appears to lack sufficient equity to play the role of acquirer without an injection of capital from an outside investor. Private-equity firms, hedge funds or even overseas carriers could provide the funds to facilitate a deal."

Interesting, exactly like USAirways. Wasn't LCC within a couple weeks of liquidation when outside investors swooped in and saved the day? It looks as if all airlines will eventually be played as puppets from within the corporate greed structure that the US has become. Labor will become nothing except a thorn in the side of shareholders and top management.....and that includes the pilots, USA320. Unions have been stripped of any power they once held as was just proven this last month when the judge allowed the NW paycuts forced upon a non-compliant flight attendant group.

We shall get through this greed but will our children? America has forged ahead into a 2 class society.

Thanks for the article.

Well, we don't have to buy/sell domestic routes, so that pretty much leaves international.

We have a huge cash balance, something like 5+ billion dollars. Considering fuel is dropping like a Southwest plane on final, a strong Q3 may push our position even better.

Prediction: Beware the ides of March! A spring merger would give a nice summer revenue period to get the income going. I would guess that we'l do whatever it takes to get a merged flight schedule in place by winter 2007, so that the "network synergies" can get that capacity out of the system by then.

said.From Forbes:

"Neidl said that if a merger does take place, United will likely be the buyer.

"In the past, top level United Airlines management have expressed the opinion that in industry was going to have to consolidate and have given indications that it would want to remain in control if United participated in a merger," the analyst said."

From the AP:

"As we emerge from a difficult five years, it is time for us to begin to seize new opportunities," he said Monday in a speech to a transportation conference in Memphis. "United fully intends to expand our global reach to compete in the worlds fastest-growing markets."

Well, surprise, surprise, looks like this might happen..

No predictions on the name though, doesn't matter really, it'll kick some asses..

Oh yeah,

imho.

FLY (Penguin Power)

Excellent points !!

It really looks as if the inevitable is now visable on the horizon. It will seem strange, that a non-airline guy(Tilton) , very well may become the Father of consolidation, something DESPERATELY needed in the industry, especially for the legacy's.

CO is a "natural" for UAL(mostly boeing)
Gordo + co. run the larger UAL from Elk Grove.
CO ramp, agents, and rez., all non-union...zero intergration problems,

EWR a beautiful northeast hub for UAL to Europe.
Cle/CO Gonzo !!
UA could service SA/Carib nicely from IAD/EWR/ORD/.......mexico/central america, and some SA, from Iah....Den, sfo, and ORD to the west(pacific) and north, and trancons.

Just one problem(a sizable one) Too many hubs !!

NH/BB's

"Let the GAMES begin".......Finally

From the same wonderful people (Spraygenen/Tilton/Brace) who masterminded (??) UA's journey thru CH11 -- will now present world airline consolidation! TA-DA!

Glenn wants a foreign marriage partner and Congress ain't budging.

Does anybody know how much UA is paying GoldmanSachs?

Repeat after me Bear, there is nothing beautiful about EWR.

I believe that a CO/UA combination would run full hubs at IAH, DEN, and ORD. EWR would be downsized slightly to relieve the congestion, shifting some of the traffic to IAD. IAD, SFO, and NRT would continue to be smaller hub operations with GUM and LAX as focus cities.
