American Keeps Bases Open
After the negotiations last spring that saved American Airlines from bankruptcy and quite possibly Chapter 7 dissolution -- but cost our American Airlines members millions in concessions -- our Air Transport Division staff, and in particular our ATD Director Jim Little, were vilified by political opponents and some disingenuous Local leaders who didn’t have the guts to tell their members the truth.

At the time, I praised Jim and his staff and other TWU American Local leaders for their courage to do what was right for the long time survival of the company and the jobs of their members even if it hurt like hell. They and other Local leaders didn’t’ sit back and whine about the situation, nor did they try to hide from the criticism and the daily attacks. They went out, met the membership, told the truth and continued to work with the company and City Councils, Mayors and Governors to turn the situation around.

Earlier this month, right out there for all to see, that courage and hard work was repaid when American announced that it is keeping open all three overhaul bases in Tulsa, Alliance Fort Worth and Kansas City. The net result is the long term preservation of as many as 10,000 maintenance jobs.

Is the job over? No. We won’t stop until every member who lost their jobs during this crisis is back to work, and every penny they gave up is restored.

But we had to start somewhere, and this was a great start. Together, we can and will make a difference.

Yep,

Save the jobs, while removing job security protection for over 3500 TWU members.

All the while cutting pay and benefits below any other carriers bottom dollar.

And CIO is so damn proud of it

Can someone please give us a complete station/classification breakdown of this so-called 10,000 jobs that were saved?

Somehow I feel slighted and uninformed on this one.

CIO, you got a breakdown for us all to see?

Funny how the TWU has adopted the same arguements as RTW.

Lower wages equal more jobs.

Most of the labor movement fights for higher wages and less hours of work.

Not the TWU, they fight for lower wages plus more hours of work by eliminating paid lunches, vacations and holidays.

Whose side is the TWU on?

Is Concessions the only thing that the TWU knows how to "fight" for?

Despite losing over 30% of our buying power and all sorts of other benifits and language changes the only time the TWU sought to ally themselves with other unions was to mount a picket in support of getting the airlines government aid. When that aid stabed workers in the back no pickets were set up.

The TWU has done a good job at fighting for American Airlines, they have used our money to get us to give away over $120,000 over the next 5 years in exchange for 430 shares of stock. They have done this despite the fact that similar concession for stock plans at EAL, Pan Am and UAL all resulted in huge losses for their members and all the carriers going bankrupt, in no doubt partially because of the poor morale that the hardships suffered by its workers.

The fact is that Sonny Hall is a greedy old coward. I'm sure back in 83 they said they would get it all back, well we never did get the paid lunch back, eliminate part time or cross utilization or scores of other concessions, along the way we lost the annuity plan, company provided LTD, company paid medical, we got prefunding, now we only have 5 holidays, and if we work we only get 4 hours pay for eight hours worked-another TWU first. We gave up a week of vacation earned last year! If they still have not been able to get back what they lost over twenty years ago why should we have any faith that they will get back all of what we gave up this time, never mind the $120,000 in lower earnings for hours worked over the next five years?

Together? Where was Sonny in all of this? How did he sacrifice? How about Little? Solidarity? Sonny Hall does not even know what it means.

Sonny Halls promises are just as hollow and useless as Jim Littles, who weeks before the concessions proclaimed that he would negotiate concessions, his exact words were "Not on my watch".

Hey sonny!

CIO,

AA has threatened to shutdown the overhaul bases and outsource everything ever since I've worked at AA. I can see 5 or is it 6 years from now: If you don't vote yes to 50% paycut we're gonna close the bases! The TWU sold us out pure and simple! If they even threatened to close the bases, we should have all walked out on strike, not give up the farm. It's better to go down fighting, than be a slave for the rest of your life! All the TWU did by giving in was give AA more ammo against us!
