Twu Local 514 Tul - New Admin Building

2.3 million dollars wasted on an unneeded new union hall. Why doesn't the TWU use that money to help the TWU MEMBERS financially that have been laid off?

Now THAT image is funny. :D

What is not so funny is that anyone could be so stupid as to spend $2.3 million on a new union hall on what could be the eve of massive layoffs at TULE, combined with thousands of union brothers already on furlough.

Almost as stupid as anyone who bought a new truck since late 2001. Anyone with a lick of sense could see the writing on the wall - but some just gotta have it anyway.

Hope your next card drive is successful.

Gotta ask - how come the AA mechanics never formed their own union like pilots and FAs did?

What? Are you kidding? The twu doesn't have anyone on layoff, thats only the AMFA airlines, NWA, UAL, Alaska etc, etc. Maybe they should build a new hall for MCIE too.

Then AMFA could get 2 for 1 deal next year. :p  :p

What's not funny is the twu Intl still owns the new building even though it's the local members money being spent against their collective wishes.

To answer your question about forming our own union and give you a little backround:

It could be done but we would be in all likelyhood copying AMFA's constitution. With that said and the money needed to get the new union up and running it would be next to impossible. It took 300k from AMFA just to get the legal right to pass out cards in Tulsa. Yeah it's guaranteed in this country but just not on "American'" soil. Also remember the pilots when they split from ALPA had some massive donations from their ranks, higher salary, higher donations. They also had a lawyer in Marty Seeham who was willing to take a chance in them and didn't screw them over in legal fees. The F/a's were lucky eneough to have 2 lawyers in their ranks who led the charge to get out the twu and form their own union.

I know that this was a long time ago, but before the AA AMTs had the TWU, weren't they represented by an independent union called ALMA (Air Line Mechanics Association)?

Yup. In the late 40's, the TWU was voted in. At that time, most mechs were in NYC, and were well aware of the success Mike Quill had in increasing the wages and benefits of the NYC bus and subway workers, so they voted in the TWU.

The TWU did pretty well, too, at least for a while. We were always a nickle ahead or a nickle behind the other airlines, depending on what stage of the contract each was in. We gained a little every contract, and never lost.

Our pay and benefits were as good as the other airlines until CR Smith left to join LBJ's cabinet as secy of transportation. Then Charley Pasciuto was given free rein and a slush fund, and the TWU began their givebacks.

Regarding the previous ('40 era) union for machanics at AA.....about a year ago on this very site was a copy of Labor Department informing the IAM that TWU had now gained the necessary votes to represent the mechanics and IAM was out and TWU in.

Regarding a new union hall. If that is true....that is dispicable. 514 needs a new union hall like a hole in the head. Yes, 514 has big $$$ in the bank, and yes 514 should use this $$$$ to "correctly" serve the membership that provided the big bank accont. Things like job-retraining...things like free day care since mon now has to work.

And don't forget the time and money your 514 officers and butt buddies spend making up election campaign signes in the "sign shop" out back of current union hall. They have all this time and energy to devote to changing the world, but no time to process the backlog of years of member grievances. I know, the company doe's not want that.

But the title on the building will show the Intl., as they own everything even though it's the locals money. Mafia, alive and well.
